Wow, I’ve been working on wedding stuff for a week and a half and I’ve already gotten so much nailed down. My brother said that planning his wedding was long and hard, but I’ve had the opposite experience. It’s been rather easy so far. I’ve just been approaching this event as if I were producing a project. I guess it helps to think of it that way. We’ve also had some time to discuss what we’d like, over the past year, so now it just comes down to choosing and booking.
I realize that we seem to be planning much earlier than many people, but our strategy for this summer is to plan as much as we can and to pick out what we want and put deposits on the things that need immediate deposits. The rest of the stuff can wait until January when we are between semesters. If have everything picked out and chosen a head of time, we can just cut the check on Jan. During the academic year, we don’t really have any time or energy to think of anything else but school. This way, we have the piece of mind, knowing that things are settled and not hanging over our head.
So, here is some of our progress, so far:
[+] During Kim and Ira's trip, Kim mentioned that she wanted to rent a photobooth for a party. I had looked into it last year and the prices were so high. I ran the idea by Tim again and he was all for it. I talked to my dad and since I'm saving so much money on invitations (making them myself), videography, etc. he loaning me money for the deposit. I also found a couple of companies that are much more reasonable than the ones I looked at last year.
We are looking into these two companies:
http://www.redcheese.com/socal/: This company employs high quality digital double print outs of the photobooth pics. They also supply you with a CD with all the pics taken during the event.
http://photoboothscrapbooks.com/index.htm: This company employs old fashioned emulsion booths (the type that take time to dry).
Both companies offer unlimited photos, two attendants for the duration of the event, and they put together a photo guest book for you (they even supply the book). Most of our friend love photo booths and it just seems very’us’. We may set it up in the library/ bar area.
[+] We also visited a few cake places. I took Tim to French's and he ate two cupcakes (red velvet and vanilla buttercream).
http://www.frenchsbakery.com/weddingcakes.htm French’s was much more reasonable than any other place I looked at. Plus, their cupcakes rock and they just took 1st place at the OC Fair.
My friend, Kat, has a friend that owns a cake shop in Westminster so Kat is taking us cake tasting next week. They are even more reasonable than French’s. I love little Vietnamese gems.
Here is the site:
http://www.finaltouchbakery.com/finaltouch/ourcakes/wedding/We like the smooth ivory cakes with ribbon and flowers.
[+] Jon's dad runs a karaoke business and he is going to let us use his sound equipment and DJ our event. We love Papa Caro. PS: no karaoke at the wedding
[+] Tuesday, I met with the woman who is doing our flowers (
http://www.mercibouquet.com/). She is a family friend and she is giving us a great discount. My brother, Danny, sometimes delivers flowers for her, and my sister, Tori, used to work in her shop. She is very cool and gets 'us'. Of course, we are also DIY with some of the centerpieces and décor. I am in the process of searching for tall glass vases to compliment the contemporary theme and tall cathedral ceilings. I found some at Target of all places and they were fairly cheap.
I’m also going to take a trip up to LA’s fashion district with one of my costume designer friends, to buy bulk ivory chiffon for the ceremony and décor.
A while back I bought a ton of ribbon from Costco. I love working with ribbon and paper and this is what I have so far:
- 50 yards+ black single faced sating
- 150 yards of red 1.5” wire edged satin organza edged
- 100 yards of red 2.5” satin, organza edge
- 50 yards of ivory 2.5 wire edged
- 100 yards+ of 7/8” black single faced satin
- 100 yards+ black .25” single or double faced satin
Tim wanted to build a wedding website where our friends and family can obtain more info about the wedding, hotels nearby, online RSVP, etc. My out of state family would love to see what we are up to, especially if they can’t make it out to Irvine for the wedding.
Next installment: my invite design.
