High Hopes

From a third-class city to a first-class city.  That's what happened to Naga City when Jesse Robredo became Mayor.  A receiver of the 2000 Ramon Magsaysay Award for Government Service he is one of a few who proved that good governance is still possible here in the Philippines.

I have never voted during elections.  And I know that because of this, I cannot fuss about all that is wrong in our government.  I have no right in doing so because I did not elect anyone.  But I feel that not electing is better than abstaining on all the positions open.  I think that I would not vote for anyone anyway.  Until I heard about Jesse Robredo.  He actually won the elections and he was able to govern correctly Naga City.  This gives me hope like Sir Harvey that there are people who are able to govern.

But we must also do our part for our country.  We must vote correctly. We should not sell our votes to get money.  Because if we only sell our votes, we would not see our country progress.  Corrupt officials buy votes because they know that there are people willing to sell theirs.  Corruption is rampant because we let others do what they want.  We as sons and daughters of this country must not just be complacent with the unsatifactory state of our country.  I remember this e-mail from a South Korean talking about how South Korea was able to surpass their depressing state because its people was willing to sacrifice for the sake of their country.  If we could be like them, if we were willing to do something for our country like what Jesse Robredo is doing however small the act would be, our country would progress.  If we have that as our nation’s common goal, I believe that we can do it.

I would start by voting during the next elections.
