Maybe someday soon the pleasure of domesticity will wear off. Or maybe it'll take until next fall when I come home from a long day of class and realize I still have to make dinner, wash dishes, and do homework. But right now I get a thrill every time I unlock the door to my apartment or tell Jessie I'll see her at our apartment or ask a friend to ( Read more... )

Oh man, I am so with you on the domesticity thing. Stupid little things about it make me happy. Like having keys. And keeping dishes stacked all neatly in cabinets. Just like a grown-up would!

Some thoughts on the dairy-free thing (although it may well be stuff you've already thought of, being a clever sort of girl):
-Have you done any experimenting with soy and/or almond milk products? They're not quite the same as "the real thing" when eaten straight up, but they do work well in some recipes.
-How is your tolerance for goat milk? Sheep milk? One of the salads at Zingerman's comes topped with grilled pieces of Havarti (sheep cheese) and it's pretty much a thing of pure joy. On an unrelated note: coconut milk.
-When in doubt, ethnic food. Indian, Middle Eastern, Chinese, Japanese, etc. are all good bets.
-The Alternative Baking Company makes these ridiculously good vegan cookies the size of saucers. They come in a ton of flavors, and are almost certainly for sale at some place in Ann Arbor.
I spent most of childhood allergic to milk (among other things). My mom probably still has recipes somewhere. I could look around if you'd like.

...Sorry if I got a bit carried away there. It's just so rare that my obscure brand of food-allergy-derived knowledge actually has relevance in the real world. This is an exciting moment for me. (If you ever discover that you can't eat wheat, let me know.)

P.S. When I said Havarti, what I meant was Hallumi. Seriously, how many cheeses does the world need that start with "Ha" and end in "i"?
