Nothing scared Yoosung like the thought of an earthquake. The idea of something able to move the earth so much that he could feel it, that just movement like that could do enough damage to bring down a house, a school, a sign on top of him scared him worse than anything else. He couldn't even say why, or when he'd gotten that fear, but he lived with it daily.
He prepared and over prepared for the possibility of one. His parents went with it, since he slept better and behaved more normal when he could, but they worried. He knew they worried, knew other kids didn't have this kind of fear, and they'd tried to explain that the kind of earthquake he imagined wouldn't happen here, but he knew better. So many had caused so much damage in places no one expected them….
Five months after his 15th birthday, on his way home, the ground moved under his feet, knocking him over. He stayed down, hands flat on the earth under him, eyes shut tight, and ordered the earth to stop moving in a panic that had never gone away. He felt it stop, felt the earth obey that order from where he stood, spreading out around him to create an island of… if not peace, then stillness. He slowly stood up, glancing around, noticing that the rest of the area still shook, outside of his control. It made no sense, it just made no….
When the rest of his world stopped shaking, when everything calmed down and he felt he could leave his island, he walked home through the destruction, at peace for the first time in a long time.
