"That's just it, I don't want to be a legend," Kibum snapped softly at ChangMin, one eye on the people clustered around the bed. "I'm perfectly fine not being one. But I'm not going to leave him like this."

"Do you know what you're going to do?" ChangMin asked.

"Not the faintest idea. I just hope I don't make it worse."

HyoYoung looked up at him, her eyes wide, but she didn't say anything and turned her attention back to her boyfriend.

:I think he might have been right,: ChangMin said in his mind, and sighed.

:Right about what?:

:Erase her memory. Get him out of her life. At least that would make one less area she's vulnerable.:

Kibum shook his head, his hand tightening on ChangMin's. :It's not the right answer,: he said, the same thing he did every time it came up. Sadly, it seemed to more and more often, but usually not from ChangMin. :It never will be.:

ChangMin sighed again. :I know,: he said.

"He's asleep," Gyuri said, and stepped away from the side of the bed. "Any time you're ready." She gently took HyoYoung's hand and led her out of the infirmary.

Kibum let ChangMin go and walked over to the bed. Taewoon was asleep, but it wasn't very restful. He never seemed to get much sleep anymore, not since that attack. Kibum lay his hand on Taewoon's shoulder and closed his eyes.

Images - nightmares? - flitted by his consciousness as he tried to figure out what he had to do to fix what had happened. He worked on the nightmares first, something he'd had practice with by now. Taewoon's fitful sleep eased into something deeper. Kibum just waited. The images, feelings, everything slowly stopped swirling around him, settling into what felt like temporary resting places.

That was what he needed, the lack of chaos. He needed to see the shape of his mind, to find the crack. Broken, right? But he couldn't find anything but a strange looking lever. Or so his mind interpreted it. Carefully, because he had no idea if this would work, he pulled it.

Everything whirled around him again, but this time, when it all settled, it felt permanent. And familiar. This was the mind he'd touched more than once, well fashioned, orderly in one part, total organized chaos in others. He sighed and returned to his own mind.

"You okay?" ChangMin asked.

"Tired," Kibum said, leaning on him. "He's tricky, though. I have no idea how he pulled that off."

"What?"

Kibum smiled wryly. "His mind wasn't broken. He simply made it look like it, and I think he got stuck. His talent isn't mind work, but he's done enough with someone to make it look like he's useless."

HyoYoung burst in, one hand on the door jam for balance. "He's okay?" she asked, eyes wide.

"He will be," Kibum said. "At least… I hope so. He's more himself than he was before."

She nodded and moved toward the bed, still shaky, and sat down in the chair next to it. "That's good, then," she said, sounding a little unsure.

"Yes," Kibum said.

HyoYoung didn't notice when they left, at least not consciously. Taewoon held her whole attention, fast asleep like he hadn't been since that attack. She noticed, like something out of the corner of her eye, things going on around the school, around the world, but she ignored most of it from long practice. Something did catch her attention then, suddenly, and she laughed at the increasingly silly ideas KangHo tossed back and forth with SooHyun and HyunJoong. They were trying to come up with a way to get HyungJoon back, and seemed to be enjoying the sheer idiocy of some of the ideas as much as she was.

"I like your laugh."

She stopped abruptly, still smiling, and looked down at him. "You're awake. And you're you."

Taewoon looked at her, confused, but then that cleared. "It worked. Sort of." He frowned.

"What worked?" HyoYoung asked.

He took a deep breath and let it out in a sigh. "I have to do something to keep them from using me against you," he said quietly. "I think it would kill me to try to get out of your life - especially since it would require a massive fight and more acting than I can actually pull off - so there had to be another option. Apparently I have only half an answer."

"What is it?"

"An illusion."

HyoYoung bent down and kissed him. "You'd better talk to the director and Kibum-sshi."

Taewoon sighed. "Yeah, I know. But not for a bit, okay?" When she hesitated, he pulled her down and kissed her again.
