Hankyung said nothing as the group pressed into the elevator, the silence around them heavy. Having to go up to the sixth floor meant a lot of stops along the way, and no one spoke as each group got off at each floor. The only reason Hankyung went that far was because HeeChul had invited him up.
He glanced at his boyfriend. HeeChul looked furious. From his actions, the volatile diva wasn't angry with him. Thankfully. Hankyung leaned gingerly against HeeChul, who started, then put his arm around Hankyung's waist. Comforted, Hankyung watched the others get off, one and two at a time, until only he and HeeChul, and Kangin and LeeTeuk remained. Finally, the elevator dinged for their floor, and he followed HeeChul off.
The elevator had closed before Hankyung registered the person sitting in front of Yesung's door. She got to her feet, looking uncertain. "I'm sorry to bother you," she said in a soft voice. "Is Yesung okay?"
HeeChul stopped and stared at her. "He will be," he said gently, and Hankyung stared at him, surprised. HeeChul never used that tone in reference to Yesung. "He's out for a while. Would you like to come in?"
She shifter her purse on her shoulder. "Thank you."
Hankyung stared at them both, aware that the tension in HeeChul had changed. He still felt... detached, though, had ever since HeeChul had burst into the practice room with the news that Yesung had been in an accident. But he followed them in, shedding his shoes and padding after them in his socks.
"You are very familiar," HeeChul said. "Forgive me for not recognizing you right off. What's your name?"
"Narsha," she said.
Hankyung didn't quite get it. HeeChul remained standing, even after Narsha and Hankyung had sad down. "Narsha....," HeeChul repeated, and it clicked.
"Brown Eyed Girls," Hankyung said.
"Ah," HeeChul said when she nodded. "Thanks."
"What happened?" Narsha asked.
"He left rehearsal, went to cross the street and wasn't paying attention," HeeChul said. "The car couldn't stop in time."
"Do you know why he left?"
Hankyung knew he didn't imagine HeeChul's glance in his direction, and his heart sank a little.
"He told me only that one of our managers forced him to break it off with you," HeeChul said.
Hankyung flinched. "Forced him to...."
Narsha nodded. "Yes," she said. "Is this accident related to that?"
HeeChul carefully didn't look at Hankyung this time, and Hankyung's heart sank further. "I think so. At least a little. The man either didn't know Yesung very well, or didn't care." From that tone, Hankyung knew which HeeChul thought.
Narsha blinked. "Know him?"
It all clicked into place. Too late. "He's been taking medication for depression," Hankyung mumbled. "Damn it."
"Yeah," HeeChul said.
Hankyung looked down at his hands. He felt like a fool, so wrapped up in his own hurt not to recognize the symptoms. He should have; he was supposed to be Yesung's friend.
Narsha shifted. "That makes sense," she said. "I'd like to see him. Can I?"
"Yes," Hankyung said at the same time HeeChul did.
"We'll arrange it." HeeChul paused, lips pursed. "We're going tomorrow morning. Can you meet us here at 8:00?"
"Yes. Thank you."
Narsha walked into the hospital with her grey hoodie pulled up over her hair, and a long brown coat - HeeChul's - obscuring the rest of her. She'd had to borrow a pair of GaIn's boots to appear tall enough to fit in. Hankyung and HeeChul flanked her, with more of them - she wasn't sure which, although she knew she'd learn their names - in front and behind, effectively hiding her in sheer numbers.
They'd reached Yesung's floor when one of the young men in front of her suddenly turned around. "It was you, right?" he asked.
"Shh," one of his friends said, grabbing his arm to steady him as he walked backward.
"Orange lipstick. You kissed him at Mubank, right?" He lowered his voice a little, at least.
Narsha smiled. "Maybe," she said.
He turned to the man holding his arm. "See?" he said quietly. "It was her!" Narsha had no idea how he didn't fall down.
HeeChul smacked him on the back of his head. "Shut up, EunHyuk," he muttered.
"Hyung," the man whined, and Narsha stifled a snicker. She knew she'd have to get to know them all, and keep them all straight. She looked forward to that, actually.
A nurse stopped them outside the door. She explained that they could enter in small groups only, and couldn't stay long so they didn't exhaust him. Narsha waited quietly with Hankyung and HeeChul until the rest of them had had their turn. She hoped the woman hadn't been counting, although Narsha didn't even know exactly how many were there. But the nurse didn't even blink when the three of them walked in, and HeeChul closed the door.
Yesung looked tired. They must have decided his neck hadn't been injured, because he didn't have a brace there. His right leg and left arm were stabilized with casts, his face bruised on the left side. Narsha pushed her hood off and walked over to him. "I should have waited," she said, and then melted at the smile he gave her. It had to hurt, but she saw no sign of it.
"I'm glad you're here," he murmured, and gripped her hand gently when she took his. "How?"
"Heechul-oppa and HanKyung brought me," Narsha said.
"Ah," Yesung breathed. "I'll have to thank them."
"Get better," Hankyung said. "That will be thanks enough."
"Ignore us," HeeChul chimed in. "We'll be in the corner here letting you have your privacy."
Yesung snorted softly, but then did as HeeChul suggested. "Thank you for coming," he murmured to her. "You won't get in trouble?"
Narsha shook her head. "It doesn't matter," she said. "JeA doesn't officially know where I am, so if there is trouble, it will all be on me, and that's all that matters." She brushed his face - the unbruised side - with her free hand. "A bit distracted, were you?"
Yesung flushed. "Distraught is more like it," he said, but didn't look away. "I missed you."
"That's okay to miss me, but getting yourself hurt like this isn't," Narsha said gently. "You have to take care of yourself. This ban won't last forever."
"I'll do better," Yesung murmured.
"The nurse is going to be back in here soon," HeeChul said. "I'm sorry."
Narsha sighed and smiled down at Yesung. "There never seems to be enough time...."
He smiled back. "You could just stay the night," he murmured.
She laughed. "Another time," she promised. "Soon." She kissed him, then regretfully let him go. "Until then."
Leaving was harder than she expected. Narsha pulled the hoodie up over her hair again, and went out, flanked by HeeChul and HanKyung. The rest fell in around them, their conversations continuing as they walked back to the vans. She didn't listen to them, but she did notice the looks they got. Was that normal? Well, granted, they were famous, and they were gorgeous, and... she had to wonder, though, if it were the sheer number of them that got the looks. It wouldn't surprise her.
"You'll be okay?" HeeChul asked at the door as she handed him his coat. The rest had gone out already, Hankyung waiting at the open door of one of the vans.
"I'll be fine, thank you," she said, and smiled. "I appreciate this. I hope you don't get in too much trouble for it."
"It was worth it to see him smile again," HeeChul said, winked, and went to get in the van.
Narsha took a deep breath and went to find a cab to take her home. She managed not to cry until she was well on her way.
