unfortunately the tops you described are being touted as "goddess" type clothing... something floaty and dreamy venus would wear etc etc etc. women have a tendency to take anything that is supposedly what "perfect woman" or "goddess" would wear... it's not a conscious thing in most places i don't think, but... i mean, when we were young we all got those floaty pink chiffon princess dresses... these are the "more sophisticated" thing... and i say that with a bit of irony.
on a side note... there was a point in history (time of Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice etc) that empire waisted gowns (seam right below the breasts) was considered the ONLY way to wear a gown. It was adopted intentionally to make women look more... in a family way, or ABLE TO BE in a family way. The culture at the time was responding to the fact that there had been an epidemic and men wanted wives who could have MANY MANY children for them. of course we know that a dress adding however many pounds means shit when it comes to conceiving etc, but it was a little illusion that was adopted... sort of the way that a little bit of eyeliner/mascara can make my eyes stand out... it's not that my eyes have changed and gotten larger, but it just brings the attention there...
I would love it if all of these stupid tops were gathered and burnt, BUT if that's what other girls want to do, then that's what they'll do :-\ I personally love tunics and that sort of hippy yet pulled together classily look. yep. no floaty tops for me.
