What are they thinking?

I liked the BBC Sherlock, at least what I saw so far of it. Not to the point of writing fanfic for it, but enough to read discussions and make sure I catch the next episodes.

That's how I grew aware of the mega-wank going on on a wagon-load of comms regarding A Scandal in Belgravia. the content of which left me going What. The. Fuck?... yeah bolded, underlined and pinked out. People, clearly mostly women, in slanging matches on just how sexist and misogynic this episode is, with some "that's also homophobic" thrown in. And no, it wasn't restrained to US wankers, there were UK ones galore among them.

Hello? Can someone just possibly get real? Have a raincheck?

We are talking a deeply sexist and misogynic society here, one which apart from that also rolls in a shitload of class barriers, partly hinged on the way you pronounce your vowels. We are talking a society here, where 11 year old pre-pubescent girls get side-eyed for not wearing a bra, and physically bullied to the point of being tripped and shoved when they still refuse to wear one at age 13. We talk about girls so fucked up that the very idea of their nipples being noticable during cold weather or their boobs found to be jiggling is cause for wearing wired bras day and night, all of which lays the foundation to orthopedic troubles and even cancer.

We are talking about a society where college students galore are still virgins because their body image is so bad they don't dare start flirting. Or about 18 year olds who believe that if they do it standing up (or the first time) they won't get pregnant. We're looking at a society which hasn't managed to make sex-ed part of the curriculum (as one of very few in Europe), has the effing highest percentage of teen pregnancies and STDs and which still has Faith schools teaching values of the middle ages yet supported by money from the normal taxpayer. A society where even in an average job a woman will be side-eyed (or outright fired) if she dares wear pants or a skirt without pantyhose (not to speak of - you guessed it? - going braless), where the dresscode is so rigid every female has the same clothes in the wardrobe and where this dresscode is defended by the male establishment by that they do not want to be distracted by female charms and mean solid turtleneck sweaters.

I could go on a further ten paragraphs without the slightest problem. E.g. about some horrid cases of birthrape and being forced to see male physicians or the fact how rape and gangrape result in minimal conviction rates. About children taken from their mothers or families for whatever some police-officer deems to be violent and indecent behaviour. Of the fact that a 16 years old father is unable to stand by his child with an underage mother, especially if under 13 at the time of conception, for fear of being put away for life, but at least for a decade. Though there of course are dozens of 13 and 14 year old mothers in just about any city, not regarding those teenagers who were pressured into getting abortions, or kept from having such abortions they wanted. Yes, I could go on for quite a while.

What sure as hell though is not on my platter is a zany BBC show which has a brilliant female criminal dominatrix bested at the last minute by Sherlock Holmes. No this doesn't even come close to being sexist in this society. Please do not belittle real problems that way! I suggest opening the eyes wide to what really needs to be talked about and pointed at in merry ole England with regard to sexism and misogyny. There is absolutely enough of that without even turning on your TV set.
