For the longest time, my method of choosing favorite bands had been "Have you heard of _____? No? Ok, then I like them." This didn't work out because eventually SOMEONE would like the band (unless they are Spungi) and I would stop liking them. So who would I have left? What will I listen to? I can't keep going through bands the way I do chewing gum. By the way, the longest I've ever chewed gum is probably 3 minutes.
So now I am starting over. Clean slate, forget everything you heard before. Here's some listening tunes, try them on for size. Does it make my butt look big? Don't worry about the image, the name, the place, who they played with, what their shirts look like, and more importantly, who else likes them. Is this music good? Do you like it? Forming my own opinions is probably not a big deal to most people. For me, it's like qutting a bad habit - reversing a way of life for several years.
Last night someone argued with my way of choosing favorites so let me clarify: I don't NOT like the band because they are on the radio but it is a turn-off because radio is crap. I don't ONLY like the band because no one's heard of them. Nowaday's it's hard to find a band no one's heard of because... everyone's looking for band's no one's heard of. Here's a bit of advice: find the localist band in your area. The band comprised of 9th and 10th graders, only played small house shows. There's a reason they've only played small house shows and it's not just because of curfew. It's because they suck. Those are the bands no one's heard of. So are you going to listen to shitty must because no one else likes it? Or will you listen to shitty music that everyone likes? Yes, the pickings are slim, but at least you will be able to like a band because YOU like the music. It wasn't chosen for you. Do you get a haircut because it's trendy but you hate the way it looks? No, you have to live with yourself, not anyone else. These days, everyone's worried about what others will think of them. These days, everyone has to be an elitist. Well fuck 'em!
I know what music I like and I don't care if they sell out 2 shows at House of Blues, at least I've formed my own opinion about the music. And for Christ's sake, don't wear a band shirt of someone you've never heard before!
