The mind is capable of ingenious self-deception in times of crisis. For instance, victims who had been kidnapped and tortured sometimes report that, during the incisions and injections, they retreated into a fantasy world from which they could not wake up. In this catatonic state, the victim went about life as usual, safe at home, without the tormentor grinding toes off, without his detaching and resewing their lips.
