"Little Sally Walk!-er sittin' in a sau!-cer," Five year-old Lily said as she swung between her parents' hands. The Flack family was taking advantage of Flack's day off from the office to go to the park and just have a day to themselves. Lily had one hand in each of her parents before she started adding a bit of a skip to her step and started singing under her breath. "Rise, Sally, Rise. Wipe your weary eyes."
"You got a spot yet?" Aiden asked, glancing back at Flack over her daughter's head. The little girl's dark hair was pulled back into pigtails and it bounced slightly as she skipped over the sidewalk. "Cuz I don't know how much more my arm can take of this."
"Oh! Oh! Daddy! Can we go eat by the fountain? Please?"
Flack looked back and forth between the two of them for a moment, before nodding and gesturing for her to run ahead. "Alright, alright -- go pick a spot." The fountain wasn't far and she didn't run very fast. Flack just slid an arm around Aiden's shoulders and pulled her in closer as they followed their daughter into the park.
"You alright?" he asked Aiden softly, looking over his shoulder at her. "You've been workin' long days lately."
"Says the man who still works homicide full force," Aiden said, giving him a bit of a look, before shaking her head. "I'm fine, Don. Really. Let's just enjoy the day, alright?"
Flack couldn't help but worry. Aiden had never really let the whole DJ Pratt thing go and it had only gotten worse after they had their daughter, but for the most part, they were happy. He just worried a bit, when she wouldn't talk about her cases. Rules of the job, he knew, but sometimes he just wanted to hear.
They finished setting up the picnic by the time Lily bounded her way back over, dropping herself into her father's lap and grabbing for her peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Flack just pulled her in close, settled in, and enjoyed the day with his family.
He didn't get very many like them, and while he had it, he was going to enjoy it.
