Lauren Reed was raised to be the daughter of a Senator. Smile politely, speak only when spoken to, and to respect those that are serving the country for the greater cause. Her father was a kind man, a loving father, a caring husband. Senator Reed was simply a pawn though in a game that he never would see the result of. His wife, was cruel and cold and had begun to instill such traits into her daughter as well.
When her mother finally made the recommendation to the Covenant they already had a mission lined up for her. They felt that it was something well within her realm, especially given her mother's experience and training.
The Covenant met Lauren Reed on a Wednesday. It was only two days before she was being transferred to Langley to take over the role of the Liaison to the CIA. Her father had been so proud of her when she accepted the position. Regarding it as the first step toward a career in politics that he always dreamed she would want.
She walked into the room, feeling the immediate chill through her custom tailored suit. Crisp lines, and an impeccable sense of style loaned itself to the simple sterling silver pendant that hung just below the hollow at her neck. Her stride was confident and commanded a bit of attention with the subtle shift of her hips. She stood there before the five men, waiting for one of them to finally break the silence in the room.
"Miss Reed... I like that. You know the sound of it? Very sexy, but powerful. Maybe it's the name association with your dad... that could be it. So Miss Reed, tell me do you think you get along well with others? I mean do you play nicely with the other girls in the school yard?"
The man who spoke to her would let his eyes shift from hers to the curve of her breast to the slim line of her legs back to behind her. It was almost as if he couldn't quite focus on what was at hand, which Lauren found unsettling. "I assure you, the things I've learned simply don't allow for the kind of error that could occur if I weren't to... play nice. I've been assigned to the liaison position within the CIA, playing nice with others is what they expect me to do."
"Right, right, you know I knew that. I'm just thinking about a few loose ends we're still tying up. But enough on that! Really, you are stunning. Stunning! So we're going to need your help, which I of course am sure you figured would happen." He stood up from behind the table the other four still silent stoic figures in high contrast to the animated fashion he was displaying himself in. "See there's this guy. Man he's a great guy. CIA guy. Good hair, all distinguished. Well he's just broken hearted. Seems we took his best gal. And I mean his best gal. One of those Soul Mate things. You believe in that? Soul mates?"
"I'm not sure how you expect me to answer something like that. I've been trained to be a lie, in every facet of the word, and you want to know if I think there is someone I'm destined to be out there with? I think if I believed in such a thing I wouldn't be offering myself to whatever project you had in mind." She was growing impatient with this man, regardless of his apparent higher stature, she wasn't comfortable with the careless manner he was talking to her. It didn't seem professional at all.
Snapping his fingers a few times behind him one of the silent figures pushed a folder forward for him to take off the table. He returned to Lauren's side. "See this guy, Mr. Michael Vaughn. He's a looker right? Do anything for you? Eh, it doesn't matter. He's your guy now. Your mark, your target, whatever little mission code-word you want. He's fragile now, lost his girl remember? So you just start in with the nice, and the smiles, and then? Let us know how it goes."
"How it goes? Aside from gaining his trust and no doubt the intelligence that the Covenant requires, what exactly would my endgame be in this? I'm not really willing to invest this sort of time without some sort of proper timeline." Her arms folded across her chest trying to guard herself from his wandering eyes again, as he moved in closer to her.
"This is the long haul Miss Reed. You make friends with the nice CIA Agent, and you make him fall in love with you, and then? Well then you just keep him that way. We need him out of our way for now, and I'm sure you understand that this was never going to be short term. Look at your mother."
Lauren nodded, this was what she had expected but just the manner in which it was all being approached seemed less than precise. She had some sort of belief that her assignment would have been more professional, and less... tacky. She turned on heel with the folder that he had handed to her tucked under her arm and paused near the door as she heard the man clear his throat, "Was there something else?"
"Huh? Oh no... it's just nice to watch you walk is all. Have fun making your new friend Miss Reed. We'll be in contact."
