IC Information:
Name: Alex Shepherd
Fandom: Silent Hill Homecoming
Timeline: After his mother has been abducted, before being stabbed in the leg with the power drill.
Age: 22
Appearance:
HereAbilities: Alex appears to have combat training, given the fact that he is the only Silent Hill protagonist who has the ability to dodge attacks fairly easily, has some proficiency with firearms, bludgeoning/melee weapons, and has quick reflexes. For example, he can jump to his feet extremely quickly after being knocked over. He displays a natural ability for fighting, utilizing objects he finds like steel pipes and axes to fight, and doing so in a clearly well-practiced way. Furthermore, he displays a fair amount of strength, as one would expect from someone with combat training--he can pull himself up fairly easily and smoothly when trying to get out of a collapsed room, for example. He has no superhuman powers, but does seem to have a fair amount (although a definitely human amount) of stamina and strength.
Personality: The first word that comes to mind to describe Alex is "determined". Above all else, Alex's goal throughout Silent Hill Homecoming is to find his little brother, who he feels is in danger, and who is always just out of reach. Despite the odds that face him, and despite the fact that oftentimes, he is the only one he can trust, he makes sure that he can get the job done. Whether it be reaching his hand into a creepy and potentially dangerous wall to discover what is hidden inside, jumping down a hole to find a way to escape a building, or facing up to and killing the monsters that stalk the streets of Shepherd's Glen and Silent Hill, Alex is willing to do it. Part of this element of his personality can be explained by the fact that, at this point, he still believes he was a soldier, and therefore does things without complaint, knowing that follow-through and sticking to his mission are the things that soldiers need to do to stay alive.
To some extent, Alex is a conflicted individual. Although he wants very much to find his brother, he knows that some of what he learns as he searches for him will be difficult to handle. He wants very much to understand what is happening in Shepherd's Glen, but there is a slight reluctance to believe everything that he sees. He takes a bit of time to process new things, usually because they just seem too hard to believe at first. However, he eventually tends to believe his own eyes, and can accept that there are things in the world that he had never believed that can still happen. Furthermore, he is conflicted because he has had to forgive his father for the things he did, and perform a mercy-killing on his own mother when she was going to be killed in a much more horrific way. Even though he knew these things had to happen, they will continue to weigh heavily on his mind.
Alex is not what you would call a jovial individual, but he does have a certain dry sarcasm to his tone, even when faced with things that would make most people recoil in horror. Certainly, there are situations where his initial reaction comes off something like, "You've gotta be shitting me!" or "What the fuck?!", but after this reaction, he generally manages to make some sort of wry comment. It is obvious that his ability to appreciate dark humor helps him keep his mind straight during the times when he might otherwise feel that he was going insane, faced with monsters the likes of which he has never seen before, and family secrets that threaten to overwhelm him.
Finally, Alex is adaptable. Although he has seen many things in Shepherd's Glen and Silent Hill that challenge what he previously believed about his very existence and family, his reactions are often tempered with that sarcasm and determination that help him overcome his fears. Despite being conflicted, Alex does his best to adapt to new situations as quickly as possible. As mentioned above, he does take some time to puzzle things out before acting, but once he has decided upon a course of action, he does it, even if it means adapting to a situation he'd never thought about before.
History: Alex was born in Shepherd's Glen in 1985, and was raised by his father and mother. He also had a younger brother, Joshua, who is about nine at the time that the events of Silent Hill Homecoming take place. Not much is known about Alex's childhood, except what we see in flashbacks, but we know that his parents, especially his father, did not treat him as well as they treated his little brother, and were often very cold to him. Young Alex was not aware of the reason for this, and often felt conflicted about his family. Despite this, he was shown as being very close to his little brother, although they had a large difference in age.
When we first see Alex, he is awakening in a hospital, ostensibly recovering from wounds sustained during his time in the army. He recollects that he was in the army for nearly five years, having joined soon after he turned 18, and served in the Iraq War. In the hospital, which seems deserted and nightmarish, he keeps thinking he sees his little brother Josh, but every time he tries to catch up to him, Josh runs off. Alex makes it his goal to find his brother, since he can't figure out why he keeps seeing him in the hospital of all places. After exploring the hospital, Alex passes out, and awakens in the passenger seat of a truck, having hitched a ride to his hometown of Shepherd's Glen.
As soon as he gets to Shepherd's Glen, he begins to realize that something is very wrong. After running into several occupants of the town who he knew before his time in the army, he is informed that people have been disappearing, and he should go see his mother as soon as possible. When he finally makes it home, all the while confronting monsters and strange creatures that seem to have taken over the town, his mother is essentially in a catatonic state, only able to tell him that his brother has gone missing and his father has gone looking for his brother. Immediately, Alex decides he is going to search for his brother as well.
As he is walking through the streets of Shepherd's Glen, he sees what he believes to be his brother ducking in to a fancy hotel. He follows him in, but the hotel is rundown and deserted, and filled with the same monsters that haunted the streets. Despite this, he perseveres, looking throughout the hotel for his little brother. However, instead of finding his brother, he runs into the mayor, who is also behaving very strangely and whose child has also gone missing. Before Alex can learn much from the mayor, however, the mayor is killed by an enormous monster, and Alex kills the monster, but is then knocked unconscious.
He awakens in a jail cell, and is immediately approached by a police officer, Deputy Wheeler, who initially believes that Alex killed the mayor and has something to do with the disappearances in town. However, once Alex explains that it was a monster that had done it, Wheeler believes him, as he had thought that only he could see the monsters. He releases him from the jail, and gives him a shotgun in order to protect himself. Alex and Wheeler attempt to make their way out of the jail, but are split up, and Alex escapes only to run into his childhood friend, Elle, who is trapped in a car by one of the monsters. After killing the monster that had been threatening her, Elle and Alex reunite. She explains that her sister has gone missing, and that she has been putting up missing persons fliers, but that with so many people missing, she's starting to think it won't help.
Unfortunately, they too end up separated, and Alex goes on alone, ending up in the Town Hall where he discovers a secret passageway. When he enters the passageway, he finds a ceremonial dagger and a strange note from his father that mentions the town of Silent Hill and the fact that he had to choose one of his sons for something, but it is not mentioned what this something is . He then has a flashback where he recalls his father giving his little brother Josh the family ring. Alex intends to confront his mother and ask her how his family is connected to the disappearances in Shepherd's Glen and the town of Silent Hill, but before he can, she is abducted by masked people who carry her off.
Alex is knocked unconscious, and when he comes to, he decides that he needs to rescue his mother. As he leaves the house, he runs into Elle and Wheeler, who had both been looking for him. They all agree that they need to go to this town of Silent Hill in order to figure out what's going on. It is this point at which I have taken Alex from.
One important thing to note is that Alex was never actually in the military, and had been in a mental hospital for those years he believed he was a soldier. This is something he learns later in canon. However, at the point at which I have taken him from, he still believes that he was in the military.
Roleplay Sample - Log: Alex was cold. He'd been wandering through the streets of his hometown for hours now, and still wasn't any closer to finding his brother. His brother. The one person he'd always thought he could protect, and who'd gone missing. Hell, if it weren't so pathetic, it would be kind of funny. So much for big brother always being there for the kid, right?
The steel pipe he was holding in one hand had begun to feel like a dead weight. At first, he'd been fine wielding it, had found it damn useful because of the monsters. Whatever they were. He didn't have to get too close to them to beat them back. But now he wanted to do nothing more than put it down and take a nice long nap. That, however, was about as likely to happen as reuniting with his family and having one big happy family reunion. Because with the way this town looked, nobody was going to be having a happy ending any time soon.
He took several more steps forward, cautiously, listening for the telltale signs of anything rustling just beyond the glow of his flashlight. The fog had rolled in, thick and choking, and he could barely see five feet in front of him. Still, he pressed on, ignoring the fog, ignoring the weight of the lead pipe in his hand, ignoring the fact that the gun he'd stuffed into his waistband only had three shots left.
He had a mission to accomplish. He had a brother to find. And maybe if he found his brother, he could figure out what the hell all of this meant. He never thought he'd miss the army, but right now he would have given anything for being back there, fighting something he recognized.
This was all wrong. But he kept walking. One step at a time. Get it done, and get home safe. That was all that counted now.
Roleplay Sample - Journal:
This is ridiculous. All I want to do is find my brother. That's all I've been trying to do, this whole time. But shit keeps getting in the way. First the stuff that happened in Shepherd's Glen, and now this. Now I'm stuck in this place, and I don't know how the hell I'm going to get out.
[He adjusts the camera to show his face]
I don't normally do this. But I'm asking for help. Has anyone seen my brother? He's nine years old, about this tall...
[He adjusts the camera once again to show him holding his hand up to his chest]
His name is Josh, but I dunno if he'll answer to it. He's been acting weird lately. I don't even know if he's here.
