You Can't Handle the Truth (about so many things) - Spoilers!

Before I launch into my deep thoughts about this week's ep of Supernatural, I want to apologize for not being around much these days.  My life has been madness lately.  I have not only the whole two job/puppy thing going on.  But I've been coughing for five weeks now (one more week, and my doc is ordering a chest x-ray [I already got an inhaler ( Read more... )

My only issue is Sam largely swayed Dean with an emotional plea, all the while saying he couldn't feel anything.

I was thinking about this. The look on Sam's face when he lies to Dean the first time and the look on his face when he's telling Dean the truth are the same. I think his emotion came from confusion and a longing to understand what's wrong with him. It was like he was saying to Dean (when Dean tried to use the curse on him), "Why would I do that to you? I've had your back before. Why would I react like that?" He doesn't know and he wants to and that's where the emotion comes from.

It's still an emotion, but fits with the only other emotion we've seen him have.

I'm also not sure what we're supposed to think about Sam's realization he needs help.

Maybe Sam was in denial before. And afraid of Dean's reaction, which has never been all that great when it comes to Sam's lack of human-ness. Maybe he was hoping to fix things himself? He was very interested in souless Aaron and the retrieval of his soul.

I DON'T KNOW. *throws hands up*

I hope we get to see a little of Sam's side somewhere along the way.

If wishes were Winchester hugs... :D

Except for the fear. *facepalm*

Yeah, I know. It's stuff like the fear that throws off the whole "I don't feel it" thing.

Fear is elemental, an instinct as opposed to an emotion. Maybe a soul isn't necessary.

Maybe. But what about those other little glimpses we've seen? Something to ponder.

That's true. There have been moments. It's almost as if he's half man, half automaton. (Pay no attention to the archangel behind the curtain?)

He's definitely shown snark - remember the gas mileage crack - what is sarcasm considered, anyway? Wouldn't a sense of humor be connected to having a soul - part of that innate humanness?

That's a good one! I have the feeling the answer to all this might not be quite as simple as just "lost his soul."

I wonder. I also wonder where the Campbells factor in and where that missing soul has been all this time.

They sure do know how to keep us tuning in, don't they? :-)

I'll buy confusion; I think that's part of it. But when Sam says, "You're right--I lied and let you get turned. Normally I wouldn't go that far, but I can't feel it" he isn't saying that all only in a kind of detached "isn't that odd" way. He's pleading. I equate a plea with an emotional undertone. It felt to me sort of like an oxymoron.

Could we get a hug where Sam can actually feel it, do you think?
