Something Funny Amidst the Doom & Gloom

I'm at home today, being as good as I can be.  I can't stay off my feet entirely.  I live alone.  There are mouths to feed--the kitties' and my own.  I have things around the house I need to do (An gives the litter box the ol' hairy eyeball).  But I've been trying to be good.  Supposedly I have friends stopping by after work to feed me.  That's not entirely necessary--I stopped off at the store on my way home yesterday.  But they were yelling at me over the phone yesterday (Truly!  My coworkers are scary when they're riled.), so I don't think I have any way of stopping them.

But beyond that, I have a funny story about my Kindle and fic.

Seeing as I spent a lot of time yesterday in hospital/doctor's office waiting rooms, I was very pleased I took along my Kindle.  It made the time pass more quickly.  I was grabbing something to eat in the hospital lobby, where they have a kind of kiosk set up, a few tables and a lot of couches/chairs scattered about.  I've been reading The Nyxie's Beautiful Disaster.  For those of you unfamiliar with her work, she is known primarily as a writer of scorching NC-17, oftentimes with a bit of a d/s focus.  When callistosh65 and I were talking about her, Ms. C said The Nyxie was the only one who could get her to read het in SPN.  More importantly from my perspective, she is willing to let Sam/Jared catch.  There's a heck of a lot more fic out there where he's the pitcher (so to speak).  So, I'm trying to work my way through her library.  Her Homework universe is justly famous as d/s fic.  It stars Jared as pupil and Jensen as a teacher, and it is positively incendiary.  Seriously, if you have a d/s kink (or a bottom!Jared kink), this fic must be read.  It's hotter than Hades, beautifully written, and the emotional impact (because this is a love story on top of everything else) is powerful.  I love it.

Anyway, so I'm reading Beautiful Disaster.  And I'm right in the middle of one of her epic NC-17 scenes, when the sweetest little old lady comes up, looks over my shoulder and says, "Oh, is that one of those e-readers?"  I jumped, I blushed, and more importantly--I closed the story.  Quickly.  Then, when she asked to see the screen and how it all worked, I struggled madly to find a story that I could show her and not have her keel over from shock or pop me one with her handbag.  The only problem was the last several stories I'd been reading were all J2 NC-17s, many of them with graphics at the beginning of the fic.  Needless to say, I was babbling and pressing buttons and mentally cursing the whole time.  But was finally able to show her something without wanting the floor to open up and swallow me.

Yes, I really am that smooth.  ;-)

I had a second person inquire about the Kindle at the Radiology lab.  Thankfully, at that point, I was sitting with my back against a wall and he was two chairs over.  He didn't get a look at my screen.  :-)

I thought I would share.  I'm hoping anyone who has ever been caught with an open computer screen they really wanted to keep private can relate.
