Chapter 8 Month two. Day one.
-Part two-
After leading Kevin back to his room and convincing him to sleep for a couple of hours, Eli made his way towards the archives chamber, where Alexander was already sprawled across the floor, surrounded by papers and folders. It was a tad hard finding him at first, since he had gone all the way to the back of the room and hid himself behind the giant shelves. The place looked more like an abandoned library, except it was missing the tables and chairs. There were no windows and there was only one half-broken light bulb hanging from the ceiling by a black wire, that was spreading a very dim light.
‘Why is this place so dark?’ Eli asked after sitting next to him, legs-crossed, placing a bunch of papers onto his lap.
‘Because the paper deteriorates faster under very strong light. We also miss windows because sunlight usually makes the files go yellowish and, over years, the writing becomes much harder to understand.’
‘I see. So what are we looking for?’
‘All of these’ -and he pointed around him, particularly at the files on his right- ‘are cases that recorded unusual circumstances of not abiding the law. The hospital never throws away any types of papers, no matter how insignificant they might be, since we always have to get back to them, sooner or later. And since we’re pressured by time, I thought we should start with these.’
‘Have you ever witnessed any of these?’ Eli asked, impressed by the apparently incessant number of documents scattered everywhere.
‘None, because this is not my domain. We have doctors specialized in legislation-related stuff here, so they are always the ones who take cases like these.’
Eli immediately looked up at him.
‘Why haven’t you told me about this before? Let’s go ask for their help.’
Alexander smiled at him fondly.
‘You still have a lot to learn in this place. We can’t just randomly go and ask. Technically speaking, Kevin’s parents aren’t doing anything wrong, nor illegal. They have all the right to withdraw him out of whatever institution he is in and place him into another. Or not place him at all.’
Eli was beginning to feel confused.
‘Then why are we doing this if it’s not going to help us?’
‘Because it’s the best shot we have. We need to provide a concrete example to his folks in order to convince them. Or at least, find something that will spark out an idea.’
They continued searching for hours, and by ten o’clock, they had merely gone through a quarter of the papers. Eli initially thought they only had to read the ones spread on the floor, but as it turned out, the depository stored hundreds of files, which had been kept in there for decades.
After a couple more minutes, Alexander announced he was going to check on the patients and bring coffee. Eli also took a small break during his departure, since his eyes hurt from the dreary light. After the older returned with two cups of cappuccino and snacks, he retook his spot and, with the mug in one hand and a paper in the other, started reading.
‘You know, it’s funny.’ he said after finishing the file he was holding. ‘All the times I’ve been here, but never visited this section. You see, when I’m left without anything to do, I come here and read upon these archives. It may seem boring, but I always find interesting stuff. In fact, you’d be surprised at how many eerie cases have happened here over the asylum’s history. But I’ve never taken up this section. Since I never liked the legislation, or anything connected with politics, for that matter, I thought I wouldn’t enjoy reading about it.’
‘I know what you mean. Since we’ve been here, I found some pretty interesting stuff. Like this chick who died her pubic hair blond, after stealing some hair products from one of the nurses’ bag. The authorities didn’t know if the law should be even applied to her, since she was insane.’
They both started laughing, despite being tired and worried about Kevin. Alexander handed him some chips and his own coffee, since Eli had long finished his own. He gladly accepted and started munching, while at the same time turning a page.
**
An hour after midnight and they were barely finishing the first half. So far they hadn’t found anything worth mentioning, which triggered a small worry in them. What if the second half turned out to be exactly the same?
‘Eli?’
‘Hm?’ he looked up.
‘I’ve been meaning to ask something for quite some time now, but I didn’t know if you would take it wrong.’
Eli was a pretty paranoid person, so he immediately had a hunch about the question, but all he did was to look at his boss cautiously, encouraging him to continue.
‘What exactly is your relationship with Kevin?’
And he was right, because his intuition had never failed him before. And what the hell was he supposed to answer in a situation like this, he didn’t have the slightest clue.
‘What are you implying?’ he asked.
‘I’m not implying anything, because I don’t know what to think. Like I’ve said before, I can see that you two are really close. And I haven’t seen Kevin this happy since Kiseop. He told you about Kiseop, right?’
‘Yeah, he did. But it still sounds like you are implying something. And you know what I’m referring to.’
While Alexander’s voice was calm and almost detached, Eli could tell his own tone hid anxiety and concern, despite his efforts to hide it.
‘Don’t react so defensive, because I’m not accusing either of you of anything. But I thought I should let you know that Kevin can be much more sensitive about this subject than he shows - you saw what happened when he heard the news from his parents. And I don’t want to see him suffer again, after all he’s been through.’
‘And what makes you think I will make him suffer?’
‘I don’t think you will. But, seeing how attached he has grown to you, and knowing a little background about his love preferences, as well as considering that we haven’t talked much since you got here, I’m just asking you to be careful.’
‘Careful for what? I’m not going to hurt him. And what do you mean love preferences?’
‘I mean he likes males, as I am sure you are aware of. And, who knows, maybe one day you’ll find a better job offer, move away, and poor Kevin won’t see your face again. He’d be crushed.’
‘I’m not planning on leaving this place anytime soon.’
‘I know, but I wouldn’t blame you if you were. Let’s face it, the salary does kind of suck.’
‘Look, I appreciate your concern and I know you want the best for him, but I’ll make sure to state my intentions as to how far I want to go with him very clearly from the beginning. Besides, he knows that I have had girlfriends before, so I don’t think that will represent a problem.’
‘I know. Just be careful.’
Neither of them said anything a long time after that.

In the early morning, while everyone was asleep and the sun was beginning to rise, Alexander and Eli were finishing reading the last files. They were disappointed in themselves, since they hadn’t been able to actually find anything worth solving Kevin’s issue. As they were about to place everything in its rightful place and leave, something caught Eli’s attention on his way out. Placed under the ‘Discharged’ section, there was a thin folder with the tag ‘Lee Kiseop’ on it. He grabbed it without hesitation and hid it under his jacket, before following Alexander, who was beginning to question if everything was alright.
After reaching the second floor Eli got out of the elevator -the goddamn sound, when will it stop- and said his goodbyes to the older, who voiced he was going to check on his own patients before heading home. He then told Eli to do the same and promised him they would continue searching for a solution later that night.
After being left alone, Eli’s first immediate reaction was to reach for the file hidden under his jacket, but refrained himself, as someone could see him. He commenced walking towards Kevin’s room, opened the door with a complete absence of sound and closed it in the same manner after entering. He quickly checked on his lover -who was still sleeping without movement, even after so many hours- and sat on one of the chairs nearby. He then opened the folder and began reading, trying his best to keep himself from falling asleep.
On the first page there was a picture attached. Eli immediately snapped out of his dozy mood, detaching the small, black and white, framed portrait and brought it closer to his face. The guy had a shocking resemblance to Eli in terms of hair and eye-color, but besides that, they didn’t really match. He didn’t have an intense stare, even if he was looking straight into the camera with a serious countenance, but he could easily catch one’s attention through his facial features. He had perfect defined lips and a genuinely deft jaw line, which made him stand out. Eli could tell he had been very skinny at the time the picture was taken, since he could easily notice the prominence of his cheekbones.
So this is the famous Kiseop. Or at least, that was how he looked like a couple of years ago. He reattached the photo after staring at it for another minute, then turned the page. The second one summarized general information about him, the type people write on their CVs. His date of birth, his previous locations, his current location, the name of his parents and other details Eli wasn’t very interested in. It made him wonder, though, if Kevin knew all this data.
‘He must’ve known.’ he sadly thought after that. ‘They were close.’
He finally reached the section he was most enthralled with: his medical condition. Apparently he had been diagnosed with a very mild case of Antropophobia shortly after his arrival, and had to go through several tests and trials for the doctors to reclaim his overall health and release him. He spent less than a year here, out of which five months had been dedicated to outdoor analysis. He began scoring around sixty percent when he was first admitted, but finished with a perfect score two days before his discharge. Eli was surprised at how much progress he had made in such a short period of time.
He was about to close the file and return it before anyone noticed it was absent, when reaching the last page made him stop. Over there he came across an enclosed section about his and his parents’ contact details, which included their current address, a telephone number and an email link. Eli knew ex-residents were required to supply this sort of information for at least one year after their release, for the doctors to check periodically and make sure their status quo hasn’t changed. But now he was so tired he didn’t give much thought to that sort of stuff.
He took out his phone, copied everything written on the info page and closed the folder. He then got up, reached over to Kevin to kiss him on the cheek (at which the younger shifted a little) and got out of the room. He took back Kiseop’s case as fast as possible (since he knew it was time for the shift change, and the nurses were already starting to arrive) and then returned to the lockers.
Greeting everyone he met on the way out, Eli left the building around the time Kevin was beginning to wake up.
**
Upon returning to the institution, the first thing Eli did was to look for both his lover and Alexander. He was quickly informed by nurse Bess that Alexander decided to check in later on, as he had caught a cold. Eli immediately knew it was just an excuse to sleep more (and he had all the reasons to, since they had spent sixteen hours reading files), then thanked her and headed for Kevin’s room. It was empty, as he foresaw, so he instantly turned around and went for the library. As expected, Kevin was there, sitting in his usual corner at the far back of the room, with a miserable expression on his face. He rapidly approached him, which made the younger jump with excitement at his sight and hug him tightly.
‘I’m so glad you came back.’ he whispered in his ear.
‘I’m so glad to see you’re alright. How are you feeling?’
‘How does it look?’ he tried to smile sorely. ‘Did you find anything?’
‘Not yet.’ Eli replied, making Kevin almost sink with unease. ‘But we’ll continue searching. Alexander will arrive later this evening and we’ll think of something, I promise you.’
He guided both of them to his room and, after closing the door, Kevin literally threw himself in Eli’s arms with such despair he had never perceived. The closeness felt really good for both of them, as it had a calming fallout. Kevin then lifted himself on his toes to kiss him and, as he did, he held Eli by the sides of his neck the whole time. It was an unhurried and desirous kiss which made both of them want more.
The older rose him in his arms, carrying him bridal-style to the bed and gently placing him on the mattress. He then positioned himself half-above him, with one hand on his tummy and the other caressing his hard. Kevin had both of his arms tangled weirdly around his neck, and started releasing small moans of pleasure, a sound which always made Eli go berserk.
When he lifted Kevin’s shirt by just a little and started petting his abdomen with small strokes, the other opened his eyes and looked at him with an indescribable expression on his face, which made Eli wonder if he maybe shouldn’t have done that.
‘Is this okay?’ he asked, ready to retreat his hand.
Kevin simply smiled widely and, without offering an answer, he reached out for another kiss. To Eli’s most utter surprise, he entwined both of his legs around his waist, like a baby Koala, so that a couple of seconds later he could start moving with wanton, creating prevailing friction between them. It was not long after that Eli felt his own arousal materializing, making him feel both embarrassed and possessive towards Kevin. Allegedly Kevin felt it too, since Eli could sense him smiling through their kiss.
‘So that was your plan?’ he asked, his lips still brushing against Kevin’s. ‘To get me like this?’
‘What, you don’t like it?’
‘I can’t deny I do. But I must admit, I’ve never seen this side of yours.’
Kevin simply bit his lip, reinstating their kiss and starting to move even faster. It also encouraged Eli to do same, and he couldn’t really help it, since feeling the younger lustful like this made him exceedingly turned on. Not long after Kevin arranged himself on top of him, with his pelvic area precisely above Eli’s and his knees brought up to the sides of his waist. He progressed with moving back and forth, at first at a relatively slow pace, then caught speed as seconds passed. Eli then felt his errection through his sweatpants, which made him shiver with pleasure. If Kevin continued in this rhythm he wouldn’t last much longer.
As he started moaning, Kevin’s confidence was boosted to the point in which he was assured he was doing the right thing, so he had no intention of ending it.
‘God, please don’t stop.’ Eli said, tilting his head backward.
Kevin smiled, kissing the side of his neck. Seeing his boyfriend all sweaty and close to releasing was like a Heaven-given image. And what felt more holy was the fact that he was very close to freeing as well.
Eli came first, with a loud moan and his fingernails dug in the sheets. He arched his back and let himself ascend even more into Kevin, which followed shortly after. He let his head fall backward and exhaled deeply; the electrifying sensation filling his body was so deep, he felt like screaming, but they both knew they had to remain fairly quiet.
He then got off Eli lazily and situated himself by his side, too exhausted to move or say anything for a few minutes. They looked at each other after that, still catching their breath, and smiled.
‘That,’ Eli said, erasing any traces of sweat off his forehead with his sleeve, ‘was amazing.’
Kevin grinned.
