has anyone ever tried playing with one of these "Free Offer" sites? do they ever do anything other than generate annoying popups?

I ran across a link in a user profile on slashdot (for once a link in a /. user profile that wasn't for goatse, go figure) to this news article from wired

so I've decided to try it out and see what happens. I'm using throwaway email accounts and weird name combinations, so it's going to be interesting to see how much spam and junk mail this will generate.

if anyone else is interested in playing with it, my referral link is here

at this point I don't think I have five people willing to be referred and start an account and do one of their things (I ordered from the ink site they recommend, the price was ok and I will keep everyone who wants to know and those who don't posted on how it is. I needed color ink anyways, might as well check it out) so I think my account will probably not hit their mark.

they say they're not a pyramid scheme but in reality they really should admit that they are. they get money for each person who uses one of their advertisers, and each of their users only get something when they recruit five more people to get money for the site. apparently that's now called "viral marketing". could someone please explain the difference to me?
