I hope that at some point you can try the Eagle Rare 10 year old, a Kentucky bourbon. It is my favorite whisky; they use new oak and quite a bit of Minnesota rye. Elmer T. Lee is the same mashbill but they select it out of "honey" barrels that are very smooth and sweet; also good, but the added zing and roughness of the Eagle Rare make it something I think you'd like.
I've also been drinking Aberlour a'bunadh, which is the ambrosial nectar of the gods.
Well, I'll be. The Washington State Liquor Control Board not only recognizes Eagle Rare 10 year old, but carries it widely enough that the online database claims they have 6 bottles at the Redmond store.
Elmer T. Lee they claim ignorance of.
I still need to write up the great Martinez experiment; for those who can't wait, Vya sweet vermouth is worth the premium price, imho.
jamie gives good blog. and creates fantastic cocktails. and hires damn good bartenders. the night i went to vessel, he wasn't there, but jim and zane took very good care of us.
haven't met him (yet), but certainly benefitted from his creme de violette collection (don't care what his blog says, hermes makes a damn memorable aviation; i can still taste it) and got a few sneaks of the buffalo trace experiments. well, maybe not sneak when i remember the final tab for the evening...
