I was almost speechless (in a good way) when I read about Spider-Man #583. But the article misses a few points:
- Obama has already appeared in two issues of the Savage Dragon comic book, so this isn't exactly a first.
- When Nixon appeared in a shadowed "cameo" in Captain America, it was the shocking conclusion to a storyline in which Cap traces corruption up to the very top, and is so shaken that he renounces his name and costume for a number of issues afterwards.
- JFK figured prominently in several Superman stories, even donning a Clark Kent disguise to help Superman protect his secret Identity. Another story, printed a month or two after JFK's association, had the President asking for Superman's help promoting a physical fitness campaign.
- Marvel Editor-in-chief Joe Quesada calls Obama (and therefore all comic boook readers) a "nerd" and a "geek" in the same sentence. What's up with that?
Update:
This article on the Marvel Comics site is better, with a better quote from Quesada
"When we heard that President-Elect Obama is a collector of Spider-Man comics, we knew that these two historic figures had to meet in our comics' Marvel Universe," says Marvel's Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada. "Historic moments such as this one can be reflected in our comics because the Marvel Universe is set in the real world. A Spider-Man fan moving into the Oval Office is an event that must be commemorated in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man."
And more pretty pictures!
And Superman still gets the last word:
