An Open Letter to the State of New York, and Her Governor

Dec 07, 2008 12:06

Hello New York.
It's been a while.  You seem to be doing well.  The old Apple isn't any more rotten than it's been in a long while.  I don't remember you killing Charles Xavier again lately.  All in all, not too bad.
But now we come to the point.  I hear that one of your Senators will be vacating her position as emmisary for the good of the State.  Congradulations, to her and to you all!  However, that does sort of present a problem, doesn't it...  Now you need to fill that open Senate seat.  I've been listening to the vibrations coming off the line, and I've heard the name Caroline Kennedy a few times.  I think that would be just dandy.  No, not because of her family; no, certainly not that, as you know how I feel about her father, and God knows I make enough fun of her uncles.  No, I think I like her for other reasons.
She likes Education.  I happen to be willing to vote for the Debble Hisself if the result would be increased Education Spending.  I really like the idea of investing in our future.  Universities are one of our few masterful exports, and we actually do export them.  Did you know that?  Yes, we allow extranational students to come here, and we open satalite campuses around the world, everywhere from the Middle East and Africa to South America and (I'm given to understand) China and Japan.  However.  These are often small institutions paid for by the host governments.  And sad as it is to say, our educational standards have been falling.  No Child Allowed to Pass?  Here in California, our state university system is finally being forced to take a step in the right direction, because we must combate the ever dropping funding by announcing an Impacted System, which means increasing admittance standards and continuation requirements. Another fun point is that our Cal. universities recieve only about 65% of what they need to operate effectively from the government, an ammount with is always on the drop.
Don't be like us, New York.  We're California.  Learn from us, learn from our mistakes.  Elect for Education.  President-elect Barac Obama may bring change; I don't know.  But I think he'll be listening for possible opportunities for "investment in our Nation's Future".  Don't let that chance pass by, for yourselves, and for all of us.

Your Friend Across the Nation,
J. Allen Ashford

P.S. Say Hello to Feifei for me, won't you?
