Apparently this is pro-choice action week. I did not know this until today, because I am generally quite rubbish. I think that as a woman and a medic this is such an important issue for me, and I do spend a significant amount of time thinking about it (much more than the other issue medics are always asked about; euthanasia). I tell you, it bugs the CRAP out of me when the pro-choice movement starts to get up in arms about any sort of infringement on a woman's right to an abortion, as though it should be as simple and easy as ordering a cheeseburger. "Sure ma'am, would you like that abortion for here or to go?" Sorry, but it SHOULD be hard. It's a huge, life-altering decision. And if a woman has to switch doctors to get one, I don't think that's unreasonable. Doctors are people, too. Why should you have to sacrifice your moral belief just so one of your patients doesn't feel "judged" by your entirely justified right to not perform a proceedure you disagree with? If a woman had to switch out of your practice because she wanted a drug or therapy that you didn't recommend, that wouldn't be a problem.

I don't think you're hypocritical. I don't want to work in a slaughterhouse even though I eat meat. I think the question you need to ask yourself is: personal desires notwithstanding, would you be willing to do it if you HAD to? If I had to, I could kill an animal. I'd do it to feed my kids, for sure. But there's no way I could perform an abortion, no matter the circumstance. It's definitely a person. People who maintain otherwise are fooling themselves.
