"List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're not any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now. Post these instructions in your livejournal along with your seven songs. Then tag seven other people to see what they're listening to."

this is a very specific, exam relaxation play-list, so all the songs are a little less hard work than what I usually listen to )

The Universal absolutely is my favourite Blur song, it is so much deeper and better lyricicised (real word, I swear!!!!) than their proper rock or their 'quirky and satirical tm' stuff (though their will always be a special place in my heart for both Tracy Jacks and End of the Century).

I think it's compassionate, every time I doubt it I find a little twist in the lyrics and the way it's sung, and I am sure it must be. I will now present you with evidence for this theory (which isn't so much proper evidence as incoherent babbling where I say 'see! see!' and you tell me I haven't put anyhting in for you to see and then I call you blind because only fools quote sources!....anyway)

1- 'No I don't feel that good, when I see the heartbreaks you embrace, if I was a master thief perhaps I'd rob them'

He may despise this person and may not want to spend time with them, but her wants to save them from themselves, you can hate people and still feel compassion for them and their social ineptness.

2- 'I used to be among the crowd you're in with'
Presents the idea that he used to be like that, he can understand this persons motivations because they were once like his own, and having managed to grow past it, he can see what's false and what's true and wants them to too.

3- 'you could stand within my shoes etc'
suggests tha he is still nice to this person when he sees them in person, he doesn't let it show how much said person annoys him sort of 'I wish you could know because I'm not unkind enough to how you'

I really do think there is an air of compassion which touches the whole song, there is something very regretful about it. The melody whilst seeming at first quite upbeat actually has something very sad about it when combined with the lyrics, it never feels to me like it has much bile to it. I always thought it was a very humane song, more 'I am removing myself from this because it hurts' or more, I cannot save you.

Talking rubbish, again. Ah well. Now, prove me wrong.

(also how beautiful is 'you had no faith to lose', I find it so haunting.
