Orihime's debt to the Ishida family, in her mind, was one that could never truly be repaid. But that didn't mean she couldn't make a valiant effort to show her gratitude for all they'd done for her. It was risky enough just taking her in as they had, but neither had uttered a single complaint. Even the elder Ishida had saved her life! She wanted to do something for them. Something really special, something that would definitely convey to them just how much she appreciated their kindness.

But until she found a way to do exactly that, small gifts purchased with the money she'd saved up on her paper route would have to suffice.

She wasn't entirely sure what to get them. Uryuu at least would be easy, she knew he enjoyed sewing. Some good supplies would definitely be well-received! But she knew so little about Ryuuken. He seemed like the type who would appreciate an old, leather-bound book of some sort. Maybe a diary journal. The best way to find out, she decided, was to take a stroll through the mall and see if anything in ( ... )

Szayel ran a hand over the bench he was sitting on as he regarded the passing humans. Several of the mundane sort had the nerve to attempt sitting on him. These he quickly brushed off with a carefully directed burst of reiatsu. They stumbled away looking confused and frightened, but were oblivious to the true meaning of what had just happened to them.

After collecting a fifth, spiritually-aware specimen, Szayel uncrossed his legs and prepared to rise. That was until he noticed just who was coming toward him in the crowd. Perfect lips stretched into a less than friendly smile, Szayel pointed at the girl.

There! A punctuated burst of reiatsu! Orihime's head whipped around, her eyes squinted to better pinpoint the source. Something was definitely going on here.

~There are payphones here,~ she realized. ~I'll use one of those, just as soon as I see what's going on.~ It would have been embarrassing to ring up her friends for help if it turned out to be something trivial, like Pesche being...well. Being Pesche. Besides, they would need to know just what they were up against.

But as fate would have it, the crowd abruptly thinned at just the wrong moment. While it allowed Orihime to get a full-blown look at the culprit, it also allowed him to see her directly. So much for subterfuge.

Her eyes widened as she realized just who it was. An Espada! That one would be here of all places was very bad news. There were so many people! If either of them initiated combat, someone was certain to get hurt. Orihime couldn't allow that. She froze as he leveled a slim finger at her, and a quick glance to the side showed her one of his ( ... )

Szayel watched his Fraccion miss the girl with a sigh. He allowed it a few more moments to redeem itself, standing only when Aizen's pet triggered an alarm. With a perfunctory wave of his hand, he dismissed all his Fraccion. The two nearest his collection container began to pack it up, specimens and all. Szayel was by the girl's side in another instant.

"How nice of you to drop by," he said, his tone dry as he reached inside his outfit for the reiatsu-inhibiting cuff he had prepared for just such an occasion.

Orihime's heart was pounding. She clung to the fire alarm as if her life depended on it...what was left to her, anyway. Facing off against any of the Espada or Fraccion could prove hazardous to one's health, especially on her own. But she couldn't just allow them to mill around this mall doing whatever they wanted ( ... )

Szayel's smile widened at the girl's silence. She clearly needed to divert all of her mental facilities to planning her escape. This would be easier than he expected. His lips curled into a smirk at the thought of having her as a specimen. He had long wanted to investigate her abilities. This would be his chance.

He retrieved the cuff and was about to reach for her arm when she so conveniently handed it to him. He caught the elbow she so laughably aimed at him and made to slip the cuff around her arm.

He was going to rip her arm off!

That was Orihime's first horrified thought when he caught her, effectively ruining her impulsive plan. The determination in her eyes still remained, for she had no regrets. She wasn't afraid of dying! Oh sure, it wouldn't be any fun, but this was a consequence she'd expected.

The cuff, however, she did not expect. It resembled the one Ulquiorra had given her in the tunnel between Soul Society and Urahara's shop, though there were marked differences. He wasn't going to destroy or eat her...?

Kidnapping. The first glimmer of real fear manifested in her widened eyes. If he meant to capture her, it couldn't be for any good reason. The scientist captain she and Uryuu had faced had mentioned all kinds of horrible plans for her once he claimed her for a test subject. And Szayel also happened to be a scientist. One with far fewer scruples ( ... )

Szayel's expression became even more smug as the cuff snapped shut on the girl's arm. She cried out and attempted a futile struggle, and he laughed. He was about to make some remark about inevitability of it all when she lashed her foot out. He allowed it to hit him exactly where she intended, and his eyes rolled back for a moment in satisfaction. Szayel's hierro might not have been the strongest in the Espada, but it was certainly more than enough to combat this level of attack. He let out a small moan, allowing her to see just how much pleasure she was giving him.

"Mmmm...I don't usually enjoy it when my specimens are presumptuous enough to think they can harm me, but somehow I think this time will be different," Szayel said, as he trailed a finger down her arm.

That...that was not the reaction Orihime had expected. Her brow was furrowed in confusion as he uttered his pleasured groan. He couldn't be faking it. That was supposed to be a man's greatest vulnerability. Why didn't it work?!

His words sent chills down her spine. A rush of cold washed over her brain, dribbling down into her stomach, and prompting a wave of goosebumps over her exposed arms. The touch of his finger did little to take away her anxiety.

"Wh...what...?!"

Orihime took an uneasy step back, even though she couldn't move far as long as he continued to hold onto her.

He called her a specimen. This really wasn't boding well for her. She wanted to look around her, to see if by some lucky chance one of her friends had felt the brief sparks of her reiatsu or Szayel's and was at this very moment charging forward to put a stop to this. But she couldn't tear her eyes away from Szayel. "Let go of me."

"Do your ears not function properly?" Szayel asked, as he shifted his grip higher up on the girl's arm. He leaned in, delighting in her fear as he whispered in her ear. "If that is the case, perhaps I will start with them."

Szayel straightened, glancing back at his Fraccion as they finished up their work. The girl's absurd utterance drew his attention back, and he met her gaze with the full force of his cold, clinical one.

"And why exactly would I do that?"

There was plenty of fear to be had. But other than the frantic beating of her heart and the beads of sweat that were beginning to manifest on her skin, Orihime kept her emotions tightly coiled. Being afraid wouldn't help her, and she knew it. She had to fight!

It didn't help having him lean in that close to her, his breath almost sensual as it danced upon her ear. Orihime tightened her jaw, and tightened her resolve.

Abruptly she stopped trying to jerk free from his grip, lunging toward him instead. She clamped her teeth onto his shoulder and bit savagely, uttering a vicious, feminine little growl. He couldn't say that she hadn't warned him!

The feeling of blunt teeth attempting to sink into his flesh sent a shiver of real pleasure down his spine. Szayel's eyelids fluttered, and he took a deep breath, the air whooshing out in a delighted sigh a moment later. He ran his hand through the girl's hair, deft fingers massaging her scalp as he went.

"I'm so pleased we have an understanding," Szayel said, his voice a low purr.

W-what was that reaction?! Was he a masochist? How was she supposed to fight off someone like that?

Prickles danced in the wake of his fingers upon her scalp as she stiffened, recoiling from his shoulder. It was a nauseating feeling, to have her hair played with (which she enjoyed) by an Espada who had no doubt already begun thinking of unspeakable horrible experiments to perform on her (which she would definitely not enjoy). The conflicting emotions were difficult to sort through. Orihime trembled, and her face grew pale at his implications.

"N-no! No, it's not like that!" she exclaimed hastily, waving her free hand vigorously back and forth. Was she in worse trouble than she thought?! Her fingers scrabbled for the clasp around her arm when she noticed the glint of Aizen's ring on her finger.

How could she be so stupid as to forget something like thatOrihime squirmed in his grip, her fingers darting for the ring so she could switch it to the other hand. She wasn't really looking forward to dropping herself into Aizen's ( ... )

Szayel smirked. Did she really think he was going to fall for that? He jerked his fingers tight in her hair and pulled her head back. His free hand caught hers and he leaned in to lick her neck, noting the deficiency in potassium he could taste.

"After tempting me so much, should you really be saying that?" Szayel pulled back enough to meet her gaze, his eyes boring into her own.

Orihime's breath caught in her throat. She couldn't see what he was doing to her neck, but she didn't have to. Her eyes squeezed shut as she bleated, squirming more desperately to wrest herself out of his hands. No, this wasn't happening...! No way! He was just trying to frighten her, it had to be that!

Szayel was very effective in that regard.

Her eyes were wide and fearful when he looked directly at her. She couldn't speak, paralyzed on the spot. The moist trail of his tongue was now bitterly cold, exposed to the air. That had to be why she was trembling so violently. What should she say? What should she do?!

"D...don't. Don't, please...!" she whispered, her throat painfully dry. "Let me go!"

The girl's reaction was typical of his specimens. Szayel would have been bored if she were anyone else, but her powers and her importance to Aizen kept him pleasantly and perversely interested. He had plans for this girl. Just the thought of the things he was going to do filled him with so much glee he couldn't help the mad chuckle that started in his throat. He managed to stifle it so the sound only barely escaped from his lips, but that release was enough for him. Szayel sighed, then brought the girl's hand closer to his face.

"And why, pray tell, would I do that?" he asked, before sliding his mouth down the girl's ring finger. He grabbed her ring with his teeth, never breaking eye contact with her as he slid it off her finger. He knew exactly what this was. The only reason he hadn't taken it before now was because it presented no threat to him given his speed and, beyond that, his intellect. Szayel employed this means of retrieval in order to make her as uncomfortable as possible. It was an area in which he excelled.
