Leda sighed when she woke up and looked towards the empty bed on the other side of the room. Ever since Liz graduated she'd been unable to hold on to a
roommate.
Then her cellphone rang. It rang with the ringtone she had set for her Chamberlain, Leander. She groaned, then picked up. This was the first time he'd contacted her this way, it must be important.
"Yello."
"Your Majesty?" Leander sounded confused. "You're there?"
"Yes I'm here, and please don't call me that. It's too early in the day for titles." Particularly titles she didn't believe in.
"I think there might be something wrong with the scrying mirror. I can hear you, but I can't see you."
"Wiseguy didn't tell you?"
"...Apparently not. And I imagine somewhere, she's laughing."
Leda smirked. "Probly. When you contact me via mirror while I'm here it comes through to my cell phone." She knew she'd explained those to him. "There might be a way to get picture on this, but I don't know what it is, so we can only talk."
"I see. Joining technology and magic...too transcendent, as you and Wolfboy might say. In any case, that's all beside the point. I wanted to give you the news."
"Is it good?" If Elf bigots were protesting at the gates of Faerie again, trying to keep goods from going in and out in the newly established open trade arrangement, she didn't want to hear about it.
"Actually yes. Not only has the council agreed to your plan to establish diplomatic relations with a number of Human nations, but my brother has volunteered his services as ambassador."
That perked her up. "Holy shit really? I thought Corwyn's head was gonna explode when I suggested it!"
"Actually, Corwyn has not been seen in the capital for quite some time." Leander sounded worried now, but Leda was just going to enjoy her victory thank you very much. "Okay, I'll come in this weekend and see if we can finalize this thing with your brother. There aren't many Elves been outside even Bordertown so I've gotta prepare him as best I can."
"Good, we all look forward to seeing you again. Hopefully things will go more as planned than
last time. Any news from the front lines as it were?"
"Hmm, no, things are pretty quiet so far.
Classes are going
well, no major catastrophes. I could tell you about my
love life but I figure Wiseguy and Sai would be more interested in that than you."
"Quite."
Leda snickered. "
Holidays are done with for a few months,
my friends are all doing rather well, which reminds me, have you heard from
Sparks and Wolfboy?"
"Yes actually a letter arrived not too long ago. It seems they have taken over Elsewhere."
"Oh cool! Maybe I can get a discount when I go visit in March." She must remember to tell Wolfboy that
Captain Hook was teaching here.
"You mean a bigger discount than when Micky gave you books for free?"
She laughed. "Yes. This time I hope for books and maybe a kitten."
"Skiblits isn't enough for you?"
As if he knew he was being spoken of, the Jackalope raised his head from it's resting place on the pillow and peered sleepily at her. She sckritched him between the ears and he went back to sleep.
"He's my hero. Well, since I'm up I think I'll go on a quest for breakfast. Talk to you later."
