The OTW/AO3/Yuletide wank....

Jan 03, 2010 04:07

I'd just like to point out that, except for Silent Hill and Repo!, most of my recent, quality fic are archived on AO3, FFN and LJ. I've recived more comments on FFN than LJ. I've recived none on AO3. The comments from FFN? Were actually quality comments.

One fic, Fantasy Man, was not posted on FFN due to mature subject matter. It was posted on AO3. Someone privately messaged me on FFN asking to read Fantasy Man since he read all my other X-23/Deadpool fics. I linked him to AO3. He commented on it...Via the FFN PM system.

Now of course, he didn't have an AO3 account, and maybe he didn't have an OpenID, he had a FFN account. Ok.

But no one on AO3 is commenting on nor reading my fics.

This is not a complaint, a cry for reviews and attention. This is merely pointing out that...I don't see what great service AO3 is doing me. At all.
I appreciate some features AO3 has, like direct importing of fics from LJ or wherever. That's cool. I think they need more standard warnings, though.

Regarding Yuletide. I've never done Yuletide. I've never had the interest. Move the fics to AO3, fine, whatever. The problem lies in moving all the fics from past Yuletides to AO3. Way to bulk up your story and user count there, guys. That's icky.

When RandomFanX participated in Yuletide 2 years ago, they were not participating in an archive run by people who want to fight for legal rights of fanfic. Maybe they don't want to support that endeavour. Saying that they must move to AO3 or orphan their fic is shitty. Saying that if they delete their fics, they forfeit the right to take part in future Yuletides is shitty. You say you don't want to speak for all of fandom, but your actions seem to show the opposite.

I'll make this very clear: I know I can't stop my fans from fanficcing and fanarting my stories and characters. I would be a hypocrite otherwise. Maybe someday there will be hot Non-con Algol/Drow/Suicide, who knows? Hell, there IS NecroRaver fanfiction out there (Necro gets looots of play. He's hardcore in with the ladies.). What I don't want is for my fans to wave their entitlement at me. What I don't want is for my fans to say "Nya nya you can't do shit about it!"

I know I can't stop it. People will always write fan fic. But brazen entitlement is crap. If you are a fan of the work, you should respect the creator. You don't have to like the person, but you should respect them. "I love your creations. Thank you for letting me explore them."

When did we get so snotty?

By the way, and this is a genuine question: What's Naomi Novik's views on Fanfiction of the Temeraire series?

EDIT: I remembered I wanted to say this right after I hit 'post'.

Deleting a fic, even if it's a gift fic, is NOT like breaking into a friends house and stealing their birthday gift. I really hate resorting to allcaps but I've said it time and time again.

ANYTHING, AT ANY TIME, ON THE INTERNET, IS SUBJECT TO VANISHING!! YOU OWN NOTHING! IT'S ALL ON THE WHIMS OF THE PEOPLE WHO OWN THE SERVERS!

(Unless it's on OTW, where "the fans own the servers" and are not subject to "third party rules" but I sure don't feel like own anything on those servers.)

BREAKING INTO A BUILDING IS WILLFUL DISTRUCTION OF PROPERTY AND A SHATTERING OF A SENSE OF SECURITY. TEXT ON THE INTERNET IS JUST CODE!
