Not About Kapcon

As my lack of posting indicates, I've been very busy over the past month, and particularly the last week. Picking up from the time of my last post...

On Thursday the 8th, I ventured north to the wilds of Palmerston North to play in a playtest of Mashugenah's Kapcon game, Trail of Blood (also reported by Exiledinpn (f-locked)), a fantasy scenario using Dread.

On Friday afternoon, I played a 1500 point game of the new edition of 40k with Mash. My Gothic Wombles (Chaos Marines) drew with his Marines, but I wasn't using a psychic power correctly, so I'll have to concede that one. It was an enjoyable game and I have consequently brought my Defiler north in anticipation of a few more (or, given Mash's dislike of defilers, perhaps to ensure that any others won't be enjoyable!). I picked up the Collapsing Cities CD I'd ordered before Christmas and we flew south for the wedding of surrealfish and prolegomenon.

Saturday was prolegomenon's Hen's night, so after a brief morning food expedition, I hung out with Kirk, cruised the game stores and played the World of Warcraft boardgame. It's surprisingly good, in the vein of Talisman, but with actually different characters so there's greater replay value. That evening I threw some burning sausages at Tony at the Homer Place Funk party. There was much drunkenness and I never thought I'd seen Will do that with a camel!

On Sunday we walked to the Sign of the Packhorse with slothphil and lilenigma. Words and pictures by the former. Much of this week is covered by purpledragon3's parallel post, so I'll be brief until I organise my photos.

Monday was a bit of a rest day with a trip to Real Groovy to buy Black Sheep, the first two Back of the Y DVDs and the Luger Boa album, a picnic in a park, maccas at Kaiapoi, and getting my hair cut at Rangiora.

From Tuesday til Thursday we drove to Twizel around the Canterbury foothills, hung out near Twizel, ate salmon, and drove back through the Waitaki valley (as recorded by purpledragon3).

While the girls went to the day spa, I hung out with the groom while he ran a few errands. We watched a bit of the latest thing, televised beach cricket. The combination of retired cricketing greats playing casual cricket on a beach while mic'ed up is like the best parts of a 20/20 match and the celebrity/charity/retirement matches they seemed to show in Oz a lot in years past. Then we played some more WoW with Kirk and Tony. We let Nick win obviously. ;) After takeout Chinese, I went round to a friend's place and watched Jack Brooks, Monster Slayer: a thoroughly and hilariously predictable monster movie with a crazy plumber, a night school science teacher, evil mist, tentacles and zombies, huzzah!

Saturday was wedding day and began with a bucket of balls at the driving range with the groom's party, including an amazingly hit 9 iron out of a bunker on the practice chipping & putting green. Sadly, I was aiming at the far hole, not the near hole so my out-of-the-park overhit was even more ridiculous. Despite the threats of the best man, my feat didn't find a place in his speech. The wedding was fantastic and the whole evening went smoothly with the only hiccup the wind at the venue which prevented the mic from being much use in the ceremony. At least it wasn't 30+ degrees though.

On Sunday, the marital events concluded for most with an after match function at the bride's parents house including a large game of backyard cricket. As on the stag's night, the game brought on a ferocious thunderstorm, but not until we'd played a couple of innings anyway. My bowling and catching was mostly great, but Becky's brother Chris had my number at the batting crease! After the torrential downpour and mild flooding, we flew back to Wellington where, for once, the weather was mild by comparison.

Now the less busy and more work-y portion of my break can begin.
