At 11.30pm last night my computer (or more specifically, WinXP) decided to have a spasm. As I tried to open up a Microsoft Office programme, it tells me set up is not complete. Bear in mind I had been using this new set up of my laptop for the last 2 months at least. Strange, I thought, so I tried to reboot. Only to get a very similar message.
Oh, it let me reboot all right... right up to the point where it tells me Windows set up is NOT COMPLETE and I had to set up again. I admit to a brief panic attack, but thanks to some quick smart tutoring from Seb when my computer last failed me, I had already had plan B in action. I now had three partitions on the HDD and one of them was a Windows emergency boot which had an image of my boot drive, even if it was a month old. After saving my documents and settings folder into another directory, I happily (but with some trepidation, since I was doing this for the first time) reinstalled the image.
I'm glad to say it all works well! And I am back online with minimal fuss! I mean, it took me 45 mins with all the copying of files and reinstalling of the image, but I got to bed earlier than I thought and am now typing this entry on my laptop.
*hugs laptop* I love you dearly, don't ever do it to me again!
Moral of the story: Make sure you d0 back up images of your boot drive regularly. Oh, and make friends with geeks. :D
