Jan 20, 2007 18:38

For those just tuning in, this is part of my challenge to pimp crossovers/alternate realities. Give me any two fandoms and I will write a crossover (see here) or see the alternate reality challenge here.

For Coyotegoth

Fandoms: Harry Potter and Doctor Who (Fourth)

Title: As Played by Masters

Rating: PG. Vague spoilers for HBP.

Genre: Drama/Dialogue. Dark.

Word Count: ~620

Summary: Humour an old man, Doctor. What is there to fear from a game of lightning chess?

Notes for coyotegoth: Although I'm not quite sure this is what you were looking for, this is Serious!Fourth and Serious!Dumbledore doing what they do best- play the game. For those not familiar with Doctor Who or the Fourth Doctor, there will be a brief explanation at the end of the story, for reasons that will later become obvious.

As Played by Masters

"In chess, as it is played by masters, chance is practically eliminated."
-Emanuel Lasker, Brettspiele der Völker, 1930

"It's been some time, Doctor."

"Well, relatively speaking, it's been… Actually you're quite right, Professor… or is it Headmaster now?"

"Headmaster. And I find Doctor, that I've become very used to being quite right. Lemon drop?"

"I'm afraid it wouldn't agree with me. Jelly baby?"

"Oh no. I took the trouble of looking over one of them after the last time- delightful candies that they are. How on earth did you manage to manufacture that combination-"

"Quite probably Professor, the same way you managed to inject that particular non-self affecting, mood-altering truth serum into the lemon drops."

"Ah… I see we understand one another."

"What I don't understand, Professor, is why you would deliberately muddy the timelines like that. You knew that it would draw some form of me in to… Ah… I see."

"I can assume, of course, Doctor that you've already cleaned my diversion before coming to meet with me. Which means of course, that you have the time to play a game of chess. I have missed our games."

"Professor-"

"Humour an old man, Doctor. What is there to fear from a game of lightning chess?"

"Chess is not the game I am wary of, Professor."

"Please."

-Beat-

"Very well. Shall we begin?"

-Lengthy Silence-

"Ah… an interesting move, Professor. I admit that I am intrigued by the level of complexity of your moves here. Unraveling that timeline… You have children advancing most of your strategic plays."

"They are adaptable pieces, Doctor. Unlike adults, their role has the potential to expand and develop once they have reached a specific stage in the game."

"And before that they are more expendable than a fully realized piece with a set of more complicated abilities."

"Why Doctor… You do understand… chess."

"Apparently not well enough. Although I do not believe I could have sacrificed my pieces on the board as you have just done, it does seem to have given you an advantage in the larger game."

"One must do what is right, Doctor. Not just for the individual, but for the whole."

"You think Professor, like the most exemplary form of a Time Lord President."

"Thank you."

"It wasn't a compliment."

"Thank you, nonetheless."

"So what happens Professor, if your gambit fails? If those weaker pieces are unable to reach the necessary level to affect the overall play?"

"Then the more developed pieces are sitting in reserve, waiting to take advantage of the confusion caused by the weaker pieces."

"A strategy of logical thought."

"Indeed. Check, Doctor."

"And mate, Professor."

"Oh very well played, Doctor. Although fond of my own, I was never good at recognizing the diversions of others. And I fear I will have no time to remedy that."

"You are dying."

"Most unfortunate encounter with a bowl of poison. I would have liked to see this through, but I have set as much in motion as I can. It must play out as it will. We are not so different, you and I, Doctor, despite your protests. Once you find a cause worth championing, it is amazing what you will sacrifice to see it through."

"I think we might disagree on the manner of acceptable sacrifices, Professor. But it is interesting… you do not seek the power to rule, to order to your will?"

"No… that time is past. I have been content to guide, to nudge. Although you may have difficulties accepting this, I am… very fond of my people. They are so passionate, so… alive. I am not afraid of the end- this is my time. But I will miss them… Almost as much as I will miss you. Good-bye, Doctor. Thank-you for the game."

"It was my pleasure. Good-bye… Koschei."

Explanatory Note (large parts courtesy of Wikipedia because I'm too lazy to make this up myself):

The Fourth Doctor was a charming, manic bohemian with a lengthy scarf and a fondness for jelly babies. Despite this, the Fourth Doctor was actually far more aloof and authoritative than his previous incarnations. In fact, he not only seemed more inclined towards a solitary existence he also emphasized that he was not human, but rather a Time Lord with much larger concerns than the Earth.

The Master is a renegade Time Lord who is the greatest individual enemy of the Doctor. A would-be universal conqueror, the Master's stated goal is to control the universe, with a secondary objective of eliminating the Doctor. His most distinctive ability is that of hypnotising people by fixing them with an intense stare. Although Time Lords have the potential to postpone death by completely renewing their bodies, the ability can only be used twelve times. The Master has used up all twelve of his regenerations and survives by inhabiting another body and erasing the original consciousness. As last known in the series and spin-off media, the Master had been banished to unknown parts by the power controlling Glory, the focal point of the Omniversal spectrum which underlies all existence. There is some speculation that the Master and the Doctor were once good friends, before he embarked on his search for power. The Master's original name, before becoming evil? Koschei.
