Against all odds

Of late I've come to admire a young girl for her determination and perserverance. I'd like to share her story here..

She was diagnosed as suffering from discalculia, dyslexia and disgraphia, which in layman terms means that she was learning disabled. Generally, children are either dyslexic or discalculic or disgraphic but she had all three which made attending normal school a real challenge for her. Despite that, she went to a normal school like we did. And from what I'm told, it was sheer determination and hardwork that saw her through. Most "normal people" can sympathise with a person having a physical disability but are quick to ridicule people like this young girl whose challenges are of a slightly different nature but a sort of handicap all the same. So at times she did not receive good support from her teachers because they failed to understand her problem.

Last week she came home with a huuuuuuuge smile on her face, a box of mithai and a marksheet showing 60% marks in the SSC examination! Clearing the SSC exam with a 60% may not seem like an great thing but this 60% is equivalent to a normal student's 90%.

When we asked her what she intended to do next, she promptly replied that her ultimate goal was to become a Special Educator and help other children like herself. The look on her face showed that she was truly set on achieving her goal. Not that she isn't faced with the same problems anymore, it's just that her grit has managed to overshadow them. :)
