So, I just heard on the street (rather litterally, actually, and more explicitly, this was bike-to-bike news) that my friend Noah von Bike Club, and not Noah Noah at all so don't freak out, was hit by an SUV in a crosswalk while riding his bike through. He wasn't wearing a helmet and ended up in the hospital. Nothing was broken, apparently, but still. Shame to hear, really, because a.) he always wears a helmet, I don't know why he wasn't then and b.) he is the sweetest kid anyone could ever know and it's absolutely terrible that shit like this happens to the nicest people.
A somewhat more cheerful anecdote, I stepped off the bus this morning and into my Comp Dude as he was having a cigarette. He asked me where I was coming from, I said Bloomfield, he asked if I lived there as he says he saw me riding out there the other day, I said no. We discussed Gaelic because he was intrigued that I was taking it. I am looking forward to a conference with him regarding my writing progress next week. It seems like a good excuse for me to be terribly narcissistic and talk about my favorite thing in the world (almost) to talk about: my writing. Yay conferences- they are food for the ego and they get me out of class for three days. Huzzah.
Ah, the other amusing anecdote:
Noah (Noah Proper) and I decided yesterday, while sitting under the oak tree outside the Cathedral and after trying one, that acorns would be really good as acorn meal and ultimately as pancakes. So, in the spirit of the truly free hunter and gatherer, we grabbed a grocery bag and filled it with 5-6 pounds of acorns. Just the process of picking up acorns was enlightening as we mused over the reality of doing this in a subsistence fashion. It made us appreciate a connection with our prospective food. As he pointed out,t hey were our acorns because we picked them. We didn't just buy them, we worked for them; but it wasn't work really, it was fun.
We took them back to the house and looked up on the all-powerful internet how to take the tannin out of them. So we leached them, which involved shelling them and then beating them, quite literally, to a pulp, then soaking them in water in a towel over a seive and then we had to freeze them because we hadn't the time to finish the pancakes. but by the end of the process, they smelt of brown sugar and I am excited to see the conclusion. We think we could devise to candy some of them as well, or make acorn brittle with cashew butter and peanut butter, and I think they'd be nice in a salad. Any other ideas would be awesome. If our experiments work out, we will make acorn dishes to the max and have a feast. BYOAcorns.
It was a delightful afternoon.
Yesterday we watched almost two seasons of Arrested Development too, which is hysterical. It's so miserable and dark, I love it and highly recommend it to anyone with an acceptable sense of humor. :)
Ideas for acorns! Like that Men Ohne Hats song, "Ideas For Walls"!!
