He takes a breath and pulls an arm back at the same time, splitting the rhythm of his legs into a quick flutter kick, and swings his arm forward again, wrist angled so he cuts into the water like a knife. He changes the angle of his wrist again, broadens his palm, taking handfuls of water and using them to pull himself forward. He lifts his other arm free from the water and swings it forward in turn; cuts into the water's surface, uses the weight of the water to pull himself forward, legs kicking like propellers in his wake.

this is so good. ...i really wish i were a swimmer myself so i could appreciate this even more from the perspective of a person in the know.
