she had her fire back; everyone best look out! anamuan February 11 2011, 04:51:50 UTC
"Really? Are you thinking of like, you know, marriage? Wedding bells? White dresses?" Nikki asks. She's getting flaky pastry everywhere, but there's no neat way to eat a good croissant.

Peyton shrugs, but it's not a 'yes' kind of shrug. Nikki's kind of relieved. She can't get out of the young professional mindset. Settling down--even Peyton and Kei in their "boringly domestic" (secretly adorable) relationship--still kind of freaks her out. Her friends are way too young to be getting married.

"His career, you know. I don't want a shotgun wedding, though."

Nikki laughs at that, and Peyton laughs with her, mouth curling up and happy around her coffee spoon.

*

They've got a rule for the bed: bottoms required unless fucking (for a very broad definition of 'fucking'). It was implemented after an incident where Yamapi had gotten up and stumbled stark naked and most of the way asleep halfway to the door to answer the bell before Nikki and Kame had managed to stop him. By the time they'd gotten everyone sorted and decent enough to see who was waking them up so early on a Saturday, the postman had left them a note saying they'd tried to deliver a package (cookies, from mycroftnext. Her gingersnaps really had no earthly comparison) but no one was home, so they'd have to come down to the post office to pick it up instead. Considering all three of them had been home at the time, and Nikki now had to wait an extra hour at least to get her gingersnaps, something had to be done. This was not happening again.

So, bottoms required. Tops, however, are optional and, in Nikki's humble opinion, to be strongly discouraged. She sleeps tangled up in the middle, like the greedy thing she is, head pillowed on Kame's shoulder even though she complains that it's too bony. Yamapi is a furnace all along her back, curled around them both. If she shifts her hips right, she can feel his cock through both sets of bottoms, rubbing against her ass. Kame keeps an arm curled between her and Pi, hand spread absently over one breast.

Nikki never wakes up too hot and suffocating, wrapped up in too many limbs. Considering she'd dumped the last two boyfriends for being too clingy, that's saying a lot.

"I think you are taking this too far." Nikki leans over to peer at the magazine Peyton is flipping through. "A red dress?"

"What's wrong with getting married in red?" Peyton returns. Her fingers fondly trace over the lacy red dress on the page. One from Ueto Aya's latest wedding dress collection. "I'm hardly Christian and I'm mostly certainly not some Japanese girl idealizing a Western white wedding."

"There's nothing... wrong with it, per se." Nikki treads slowly, sliding the magazine away from Peyton. It's for Peyton's own good (and admittedly, for Nikki's mind spinning over the fact that it's a week later and they're still having this same conversation). "What would Koyama think?"

Peyton easily falls for Nikki's diversion. "He wouldn't care. His hair is black now. It wouldn't clash."

Nikki quickly buries her face into the magazine, analyzing the minute details of the dress, but when she feels Peyton closing in next to her, she knows she's utterly failed to hide her condescending smirk.

*

"Do you want to get married?"

Nikki is able to keep herself from spewing coffee into YamaPi's face, but some still manages to dribble from her lips and fall onto her white blouse. She swallows and then curtly returns, "You can't just ask that randomly, okay?"

From his voice, she can imagine his sheepish look; she is too busy concerning herself with whether or not she can still wear this top to work now. "Sorry; it's just been on my mind a lot."

Nikki freezes and there is a silence in the conversation, punctuated by Kame's yawn as he emerges from the bathroom. "'Morning~"

"You're not... proposing, are you, Pi?" Nikki's brows are furrowed. Where the hell is this coming from? Did Peyton talk to--

"You're proposing?!" Kame is having yet another one of his many girly moments and shrieks.

YamaPi looks at the both of them now, standing together on the other side of the island. "What if I was?"

Nikki shakes her head. "Please be shitting me because that would not go over well with Johnny."

i think you should continue. round robin between you and me! :D

oh and i realize that red as a wedding culture is very asian - india and nepal are all about red and so are china and japan when you think about. i just wanted to play off the absurdness of carrying my love of red to that extent (though i totally intend to get married in red if i ever get married).

"If he's proposing, I am too," Kame says. Nikki sputters at them both and then notices the time on the clock on the stove. Late. Shit.

A year ago, she'd have fucked him--them-- until he forgot he'd--they'd, omg they had both- they were both insane--even asked a question. Now she changes her top and leaves for work. Partway there she calls in sick to the office, and calls Peyton, who's already at the radio station, and says in a voice smaller than she'd intended, "Can I drop by your office?" and promptly bursts into tears.

Nikki gets off at the next stop and takes a taxi instead, because then fewer people will see her looking like a crazy person. She takes slow, deep breaths in the taxi, and thinks very hard about the grocery list and starts planning a girls' only vacation to Singapore even though she hates planning anything. She pulls a mirror out of her purse and carefully blots her cheeks dry, wishing for the first time probably ever that she wore concealer. Next she fixes her eyeliner, glad she'd used a waterproof kind that morning. As long as she doesn't have to talk she's fine.

She pays the taxi driver and walks into the lobby. Peyton's waiting for her, looking worried and hovering, because that's what she does. Nikki's never been more grateful. She shoots Peyton a watery smile and Peyton takes her up to her office without her having to ask.

"Are you ok?" Peyton asks once the door's shut. "What happened?"

"They, Kame and Pi, they," Nikki says, broken like rush hour traffic, full of false starts and rushes that don't go anywhere.

"Oh my god, are they ok? Did someone get hurt?" Peyton asks, rushed, worried.

"No," Nikki frowns, but she doesn't, thank God, look like she's going to start crying again at the drop of a pin. She looks irritated. "No, they are both crazy, the idiots. They proposed. Both of them. This morning."

"And?" Peyton prompts.

"And then I left for work because I was late. And then I called in sick partway there. And then I called you and made a fool of myself in public."

"Oh god, in public?" Wandering around Tokyo crying is one of the worst things ever.

"Better. I was on the train."

*

In the end, they go down to the company cafeteria and buy little individual-sized cartons of ice cream. Peyton makes sure they don't get MOW because Nikki had started looking panicky again at the reminder (well, also because the vanilla flavour is gross). They take it back up to Peyton's office though, because it's not really a conversation to have in public.

"You know we cannot actually get married," Nikki says, jabbing her little wooden paddle into the air for emphasis. "There are 3 of us. That is not even legal." She takes another bite of ice cream. "What are they even thinking? Ugh, stupid boys. Why?"

Knock knock!

Nikki startles a bit, having been enthralled in her ice cream and the stupidity of her boyfriends. Peyton, on the other hand, clearly has been expecting it.

"Peyton, you're on the air for the live retrospective in ten minutes!"

"Thanks, Kami! I'll there in a few!"

Peyton begins to gather a pile of loose papers off her desk. "Sorry, I have to get going. Will you be okay if I leave for a bit? Should I leave my keys?" She jangles her keys lightly.

Nikki shakes her head. "Do you mind if I crash on your couch for a little? I think I just need some quiet time to regain my sanity."

"No, I was planning on having some good office sex with Kei-chan after this show." Peyton deadpans, instantly breaking into a grin when Nikki gives a small, but amused, snort. "Of course you can. As if you have to ask."

Just before Peyton opens the door to leave, Nikki calls out. "Hey, was that the Kami from before--"

"You mean the one that was kind of interested in YamaPi and made you insanely jealous?"

Nikki ducks her head, giving what's left of her ice cream another good stab. "...yeah."

"Oh yeah, that's the same Kami. She's actually engaged to V6's Sakamoto now, you wouldn't believe it. The older they get, the more they like the tiny, compact ones, I guess."

*

Why now? That's the foremost question on Nikki's mind. The three of them had spent a year (officially; unofficially two years) together and now it was time to talk about marriage? And what had YamaPi meant anyway? Just her? Or Kame and her? And did Kame actually mean it or was he just doing because YamaPi did first?

There's just way too damn much to consider given the original conversation had happened within a span of two minutes, if even that.

Nikki instead switches on the radio. Peyton's radio voice always has a soothing effect on her and the fact that she's doing some kind of retrospective today sounds interesting.

"...it's pretty hard to believe it's been over five years since you two hit it big with 'Seishun Amigo'. What's the biggest difference in your lives since there?

"Well, I guess I feel more settled now. Shuuji to Akira was kind of the prelude to my solo career, so everything was brand new and exciting. Not to say that life isn't exciting now, but it's different.

Peyton laughs. "I know what you mean, don't worry! Though, it sounds like you are ready to get married!" A small choking sound is heard, followed by coughing, which Peyton covers with, "What about you, Kamenashi-kun?"

"Definitely looking back, I feel like I was so inexperienced. Shuuji to Akira was my first taste of what it was like to be debuted and KAT-TUN followed soon after. All the things I've experienced, I couldn't have imagined it at nineteen!"

"Oh, I bet. Both of you have accomplished so much--in your professional lives of course, but I'm sure in your personal lives as well..."

"Those fuckers," Nikki says, to herself of course, but that doesn't make her mean it any less. They wouldn't say anything on air. They wouldn't. Nikki's really--ok, mostly--sure of this, but still. They had an interview with Petyon today, together, and didn't say anything to Nikki about it before hand. On a normal day, Nikki would have wanted to know so she could have Peyton tape her a copy: she always likes hearing her boys. The questions about their ideal girls in particular always make her laugh till she nearly cries, because there is no way they can say anything like her.

Today, Nikki is just annoyed, because now she's trapped in a building with the two people she wants most in the world to avoid for a while. She needs to sort her head out, but she also wants to know what the fuck they were actually thinking.

It just seemed to come so far out of the blue. Nikki had thought they were happy--that they were perfect, really--just the way they were. Marriage, it's just, that's so big. Nikki's not sure she can handle that. She can handle both Yamapi and Kame easily, one-handed, but she can't handle this.

She nearly turns the radio off, just so she can put some distance there, so she doesn't have to think about it, but...But Nikki's always liked hearing her boys. She leaves it on, and listens to Peyton ask her boyfriends' questions about upcoming projects and concerts and tv appearances. By the time Peyton bullies them both into swearing that her radio show is their favourite, Nikki feels good enough to laugh.

*

"No one I know is about to follow you into this office, are they?" is the first thing out of Nikki's mouth when Peyton comes back.

"No, no," Peyton laughs, "Just me."

"Ok, good. In that case, I cannot believe you just blithely interviewed my boyfriends, the boyfriends who surprise proposed to me this morning, after listening to me cry and bitch and letting me settle down on your couch to hide from them. I cannot decide if that makes you the best friend ever or the worst one," Nikki pouts at her.

"I'm the best one," Peyton tells her, because she knows it'll help cheer her up more. Yeah ok, probably the best. When Peyton settles in at her desk, Nikki still rolls over to face the back of the couch, ostensibly to ignore her a little for giving her that heart attack.

"I guess, probably, I should go in to work," Nikki says after a while of comfortable silence. She could probably get away with taking a nap on Peyton's couch, which is, honestly, the most comfortable beat up office couch on the face of the planet, but she'll have the whole day to kill after that, still, and she might as well kill it at work. Nikki's not really looking forward to going home this evening. She's not going to go home early.

It's better when she actually gets home. Kame's in the kitchen banging around and Yamapi's sort of lurking half in the living room half in the hallway when Nikki finally fumbles the key into the lock and gets the door open. He's looking at her with an expression that's part apprehension part sheepish and part Nikki doesn't even know what, and Nikki drops all her stuff in the genkan and launches herself at him. She pushes him back against the nearest wall, and crawls him until he ducks his head enough for her to get her lips on his, and then she kisses him until she can't breathe. Yamapi gets a hand on her ass; Nikki snaps the top of the sweatpants he's already changed into, and then she pulls away so she can meander into the kitchen and interrupt Kame's cooking with something of the same treatment.

It's probably childish, but most of Nikki is still really pleased when they go to bed that night and have managed not to bring up the topic at all.
