There's tons of free stuff, seriously it depends on what you're interested in. I am always having to entertain mom-type internet friends, who want to do things like go to the nike store and times square and eat pizza. Manhattan is full to the brim with tourists, so it's not like you'll stand out.
Places I like include Bryant Park (next to the main library), Central Park (just dipping in and out), the Museum of Natural History, the Metropolitan Museum, Bloomingdales, the Morgan Library, the Frick Collection, and just, you know, wandering around and looking at things. There's galleries in Chelsea and shopping just about anywhere and everywhere. The East Village and Lower East Side have lots of restaurants and bars.
If you want specific things, like, idek, korean food, or handmade beer, or a bookstore, I can make recommendations.
I want to go to governors island this weekend to see shakespeare, if it ever stops raining.

places that are full to the brim with tourists are the places where i want to be a tourist least. even when, you know, i am one.
Thank you for the ideas. I'll keep these in mind when she asks me what i want to do. ^^;
Maybe we can look into free shows and stuff. That sounds interesting. I was in Manhattan a couple of years ago (...last year?) and spent a lot of time kicking around Bryant Park and that library.
