If the Russian scientists vanish, after sending radio communications that consist of screams or something like that, we'll know there are Elder Gods there and to leave that spot alone.

Awakening Elder Gods, especially in Antarctica, tends to lead to the end of our world. I don't want our world to end; that's where I keep all my stuff.

Bear in mind it might also be Godzilla or Gamera sleeping in that lake, and we'll need him to wake up to fight the space grotties that are going to attack. The thing is, you never can tell until after the brave explorers have arrived.
