More anime. Yay.
"The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" is probably one of the best comedy series I've seen in a while. It's a mercilessly funny school drama about a psychotic high school girl obsessed with "aliens, time travelers, and espers". It may just be because I'm a sadistic bastard, but the interactions between Haruhi and Mikuru were possibly the most amusing things I've seen in any series in a long time. However, I wish I knew what the hell was with the talking cat in the first episode.
"Matantei Loki Ragnarok" was different. Another series about a psychotic girl obsessed with mysteries (differently psychotic, though). The first episode was wonderfully creepy and funny, but then it went all kiddy. It did improve a bit, but it wasn't the same. It's an interesting take on Norse mythology, though it could have done without all the obnoxiously cute characters. Between Ecchan (who later becomes doubly cute), Gullinbrusti, and Fenrir, I wanted to cry.
"Noein" is different, still. It's a time-travel series written by someone with a passable grasp of quantum physics and an excellent sense of character development. The character design is unusual, but the CGI is high quality and the sound effects are wonderful. The fight scenes are fast-paced and fun to watch (I love the designs of the Shangri-La enemies in particular), and the drama is fascinating. The story is doing a good job of avoiding (or at least spinning differently) the usual cliches. So many animes now follow the basic storyline "Whiny emo boy grows a spine, saves the love interest". It's very different from what I usually watch, but it looks like it will become one of my favorite series.
