//edit// I feel less uncomfortable about this now... So *nods* go ahead and read, it's ok I think! ^_^
Eiji looked down at the chair he was sitting in, and then at Oishi, and then at the chair again. He blinked.
“I don’t understand.”
“What do you mean you don’t understand?” Oishi stared at Eiji, puzzled. He really thought that Eiji would be happy with his decision. He frowned. The last thing he had wanted to do was disappoint Eiji. This was important, after all.
“Well, I know I said you could pick anything, but…”
“Look, Eiji, it’s fine. Something smaller would be better anyway, right?” He smiled at Eiji, and followed Eiji’s eyes as they moved over and past him, still trying to figure out exactly what his friend was thinking.
Eiji glanced outside the window of his room. They were on the top floor, and he could see the full moon outside his window, as always. He was trying really hard not to be sad. But it was difficult. He was trying to look forward to it being his turn to pick something later, at Oishi’s house, but that was hard too. All the sudden everything was hard and he wasn’t sure what to do. He pouted and shifted his weight in his chair, and looked at Oishi.
“Nya, Oishi… Tell me why?”
“Why the chair?”
Eiji nodded, and hoped that focusing on Oishi would make him less anxious about everything. About the fact that starting tomorrow, he and Oishi would be starting the new school year in different high schools. Starting tomorrow Oishi would be all the way across town, and he’d be there all day, every day. His school started an hour earlier than Eiji’s did too, so it would be hard to meet in the mornings. And of course, there would be no tennis practice. No Golden Pair. Eiji sighed inwardly, and then remembered that Oishi was talking, and that he was supposed to be listening.
“…and remember how I always yelled at you for spinning around in it so much?”
Oddly enough, even just catching the tail end of Oishi’s thought process, he understood completely. All the sudden Oishi’s choice of the chair seemed perfect. Eiji grinned.
“Of course I do! Though you always let me spin if I wanted to anyway, nya… After I convinced you that I really don’t get dizzy!”
Oishi shook his head and laughed.
“What! It’s true!”
Oishi smiled and nodded, before his face turned serious again, and immediately Eiji felt something tightening and pulling in his chest again. Why did this have to be so hard?
“And Eiji… if that’s in my room,” Oishi looked down at the chair, and then at Eiji, “instead of yours… then it means you won’t stop studying at my house, right?”
Oishi was smiling, a little shyly, and Eiji was surprised.
“Nya Oishi! Of course… you know I can’t study without you!”
Oishi stared at Eiji for a second before he smiled again. “I’m really glad to hear that. We’ll probably have different classes, but… I’ll still help you as much as I can.”
Eiji nodded, and while this did make him happy, he still couldn’t get it out of his head, that he and Oishi wouldn’t be together every day any more, like they had been for what seemed like forever.
He sighed, loudly.
Oishi’s face had looked sad too for a second, but when he heard Eiji sigh, he thought for a second, and then turned to his friend.
“So, should we go to my house? You still didn’t tell me what you wanted.”
Eiji’s eyes lit up, and he smiled. “Hoi! But… it’s hard!”
“Hard? Choosing?”
“Nya, because it has to be perfect. The perfect thing to remind me of Oishi when he’s not here! Impossible… ”
Eiji ran through a number of options in his mind before deciding that maybe it would be better to actually be able to look at his choices, before making a decision.
They needed to get to Oishi’s house. Quickly. He hoped that he would be able to choose something as perfect as Oishi had, but he wasn’t sure. There were so many options… His first thought had been the fish, but… of course he couldn’t take Oishi’s fish. Although, maybe one fish would be ok? He could get a tank for it… and Oishi could show him everything he needed to know. That could be fun.
Eiji smiled secretly to himself.
“You decided?” Oishi asked, noticing the smile and knowing what it had meant.
Eiji nodded and grinned at Oishi, who was looking at him expectantly.
“I’ll show you when we get there.”
