Yes to everything. I mean, there is a reason I keep my real name far away from this account. If someone is going to be collecting info and advertising at me, fine, but I don't want them knowing EVERYTHING, dammit.

Feel free to read this article and freak out.

I've made it a personal thing not to sign up to any other site with my Facebook username. It's just...no. I don't know if it helps, but it's something?

The only problem is that the only way to really stop the companies is to have new laws passed. And the companies don't want the laws passed, so it's probably too late now. Not very reassuring, I know, but politics make me glum. :(

I do trust sites like Dreamwidth, though. Their commitment to no advertisements means they don't care one whit about our info.

(In fun news, I may have just set up a penpal arrangement with a friend! We're on facebook and live a two miles from each other, but who cares?)

Yeah, I do the same thing, for that very reason. ;)

That article is really interesting! I hear a lot about this sort of thing from Jeremy (since he works in marketing) - he's told me more than once that Target is one of the best at the game, and now I feel like I see why! *_* It is a bit freaky though - that story about how they knew that guy's daughter was pregnant before she did? XD; Interestingly enough though, I shop at Target online and in stores all the time and I've never gotten targeted ads in the mail. I guess I've thwarted them somehow. :P

I still haven't signed up for Pinterest, even though I know I can do it without linking to FB, it still just kind of weird me out. :/ But yeah, I really would rather not link anything to Facebook. >_>

That's a great point about Dreamwidth too.

(Oh, nice! Is this a Japanese penpal, practicing her English or something? :D)

The thing with the guys daughter was a little O.O for me. What a way to find out...

Maybe you've fooled them? Do you get ads through your email? Or maybe you're just too mysterious. You're interests are too diverse for Target!

I honestly am not interested in more social networks. I've got FB for RL, and LJ/DW for fandom, what more do I need?

I'm a quiet fan of Dreamwidth. but there's not much there, so yea. I'm considering trying to get more active over there. You know, one day.

(Nah, this friend is also American. I was just bemoaning the way email forces you to be succinct whereas in old letters rambling was totally accepted, and she suggested it.)

I actually don't think I've ever given them my email... Well, but I do order online? Maybe I've opted out of emails or something, because I get nothing from them at all via email. O_o

I truly am not interested either. ;) I'm lucky if I can divide my attention between regular email, LJ and FB most days, if I add more, I just feel like it's going to be extra crap I never look at.

I really like DW too, but like you said, there doesn't seem to be much of a reason to switch over there at the moment, since nothing much seems to be going on there that isn't also going on over here. I've got my backup account set up just in case though. ;)

(You know, I recently started doing that with a friend of mine, too! I was amazed by how much my hand hurt after the first letter. *_* I mean, we never write on actual paper anymore, you know? So yeah, I totally get the draw of it XD I used to have a ton of penpals growing up, too. ^___^)

Every time LJ used to go down, I would immediately hop over to DW and see who else was around. It's nice to have a backup. :)

(I wish I had penpals growing up. So much fun. I am slightly still ok at handwriting, but only because there are so many teachers that don't allow laptops in class. Because we're not in 21st century or anything like that.)
