Bears hoping fans turn lakefront orange
By Larry Mayer
LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Bears are encouraging all fans attending Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers to wear orange clothing to create an “orange swarm” at Soldier Field.
Bears players will wear their alternate orange jerseys Sunday for the only time this season and the first time since last Nov. 13 against the 49ers. In that game, Nathan Vasher set an NFL record by returning a missed field goal 108 yards for a touchdown, fueling a 17-9 victory. The win was the fifth of eight straight for the eventual NFC North champions.
“We’re asking (the fans) to come in that orange and give us that support they’ve been giving throughout and hopefully we’ll give them something to cheer about,” said coach Lovie Smith.
Sunday’s game is the Bears’ 178th consecutive sellout, a streak that dates back to 1984. Beginning at 10 a.m., fans are invited to attend the Bears Backyard Tailgate, brought to you by Weber Grills, A1 and Meijer, free of charge on the southeast lawn outside Soldier Field.
The Bears Backyard Tailgate features cooking and food-tasting presentations prepared on Weber grills. Food and beverages will be available for purchase in the beer garden area. Fans can enter to win an ultimate tailgate package from Weber, A1 and Meijer, and participate in activities such as bean bag toss competitions and other games.
Steve Kline of Evanston and Karen Goesling of Hoffman Estates won the ultimate tailgate packages prior to previous home games. The package includes a Weber gas grill, rolling cart and tool set; A1 tailgate chairs, sauce and marinades; Meijer tailgating products and a Bears’ autographed item.
A victory over the 49ers would give the Bears their first 10-game home winning streak since they won 12 straight at Soldier Field in 1985-86.
The Bears’ current dominance at Soldier Field has seen them allow just three touchdowns in 36 quarters while holding all nine opponents to under 10 points. Over their last 11 home games, the Bears have allowed more than 10 points only once, in a 24-7 loss Sept. 25, 2005 to the Cincinnati Bengals.
Chicago has won eight straight home games against NFC opponents and has scored 30 or more points in each of its first three home contests for the first time since 1965. The only time the Bears have ever scored 30 or more points in each of their first four home games was in 1956 when they beat the 49ers (31-7), Colts (58-27), Packers (38-14) and Rams (30-21).
