Sarah Palin and special needs, re: the debate.

Oct 15, 2008 19:30

Let's just clear up a couple of small things.

One, Sarah Palin does NOT have an autistic child. Her son has Down's Syndrome. And screw McCain for not being able to tell the difference -- or not wanting to, because there's more parents of autistic children out there and they lobby a lot more loudly.

Two, Sarah Palin has no freaking clue about being the mother of a special needs child. She hid the truth about Trig's diagnosis from her family while pregnant. She knew about it when she acted in risky ways during her pregnancy. She's been on the road nearly constantly, and her child is seven months old and spends a huge amount of time in the care of others. A 7-month-old baby with developmental disorders is just beginning to show issues, if even then. She hasn't had anything come along yet. She has no idea. And even if he were, she's not been there as his caretaker, so how would she know?

She hasn't taken care of a special needs child. She hasn't dealt with the insurance companies. She hasn't been through the doctor's appointments, the therapy sessions, the school admissions meetings, the IEPs, the funny looks, the explanations... any of it. She has no freaking clue, and she is NOT the champion of special needs families, no matter how McCain wants to spin it. That's a nonsensical claim, and I refuse to accept it, period.
