Around the Context:
Questions of positioning, interpretation, translation and re-evaluation
Taking as a point of departure her experience as an art historian and curator active on both the Romanian and Hungarian art scenes, Judit Angel will discuss questions pertaining to exhibition-making in relation to the analysis, interpretation, positioning and (re-)evaluation of the contemporary Romanian and Hungarian art of the last decades.
The first part of the seminar will focus on the exhibition entitled, When History Comes Knocking: Romanian Art from the 80s and 90s in Close Up, held at Plan B Gallery in Berlin. An in-depth reading of the works presented in the exhibition will attempt to outline their current relevance. The Romanian Revolution of 1989 has been a turning point in the transformation process, which - even if scarcely visible within Romanian society - had begun earlier in the realm of local mentalities, culture and art. If the Romanian non-official art of the 80s represented an “aesthetic alternative” to the Communist power of the time, the task of the 90s has been the legitimatisation of the role of the artist within the framework of the “state of urgency” generated by the extremely rapid changes of the transition period. Reading these works of art today means a double process of translation and re-evaluation, in which it is important to acknowledge and, at the same time, to take a distance from the immediate historical context of their production.
In the second part of the seminar, we will turn to the Hungarian context of the early and mid-2000s by taking three exhibitions as case studies. The exhibition, Service (Műcsarnok/Kunsthalle Budapest, 2001), dealt with issues of communication between art and the public in the framework of “service aesthetics”. It was a local response to an international art trend. The other two exhibitions, Balkan Konsulat: Budapest (rotor, Graz, 2003), and It’s Up to US! (On Difference ≠2, Württembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart, 2006) focused on translating local issues and artistic practices into a global context.
The seminar will be followed by a lecture on site-specific curating, with reference to the phenomenological, institutional and discursive interpretations of the concept of site. The basis of the discussion will be provided by the exhibitions, Complexul Muzeal (Art Museum of Arad, Romania, 1996), Interval (Dorottya Gallery, Budapest, 2009), and Related Spaces (Ernst Museum, Budapest, 2010).
Judit Angel - Art historian and curator.
Born in Arad, Romania. Between 1990 - 1998, Chief Curator of the Art Museum of Arad, Romania. Museum activity focused on the foundation of a Romanian contemporary art collection, and of a documentation section on international contemporary art. Curator of the exhibitions: Art Unlimited ltd. (1994), Inter(n) (1995), complexul muzeal (1996), Fran Siegel, Light/Shadow (1997), Antoni Muntadas, On Translation: Culoarea (1998) at the Art Museum of Arad. Commissioner of the Romanian Pavilion, curator of the Report exhibition, Venice Biennial (1999). PhD in art history (Eötvös Loránd University Budapest, 2010).
Since 1998, she works as a curator at the Mûcsarnok/Kunsthalle Budapest. Selected
