Taking its toll

It would appear that this winter is taking its toll on lots of people.

I got a call at about 11:30 last night from Donna.

It seems that Athena had taken an overdose of Paxil, and she needed me to come and sit with Noah while she took her to the emergency room.

From what I was able to determine after the emergency was taken care of, it seems to be a similar situation to what I was experiencing earlier in the week--a feeling of being trapped, an exhaustion, an accumulation of little things that suddenly seemed to be too much.

Her car got rear-ended the other day, and apparently the woman who hit her got out of the car and had a good scream at her. I can imagine Athena dealing with this--not well. She is a fey creature, with even the look of something of the fairy realm. She rarely raises her voice, even when she is upset, and doesn't much care for it when those around her do...Of course, the accident was NOT her fault (and if the police report had had the ability to over-shout the angry woman, Athena would have been able to know that in a real way), but I can imagine what that woman's ranting did to the inside of her head--especially after a blizzard and no school and no way to get out...

Ah yes--Cabin Fever. It's a beautiful thing.

They got home at about 2 this morning, and Donna sat on the couch for awhile and talked. Then Athena came back down and said, "I just threw up.", and we both heaved a sigh of relief (they had given her charcoal at the hospital). She climbed up on the couch between us, huddled up with her knees under her chin and looking at me with her brown eyes under a fall of blonde hair.

Jesus. She is SUCH a beautiful kid, even when those eyes are scared and sad and haunted.

I brushed her hair out of her eyes with my hand and patted her leg and did what I could. Then I said, "Ya know, we need to do something about this. We need to do something, once a week, just for US."

"Like the Witches of Eastwick," Athena said, smiling shyly.
"I saw that movie last week and it reminded me of you. Alexandra..." She grinned.

"Well, I think that would be a splendid idea," I said. "I think it needs doing. Besides," I winked at her, "Spring Mount could use an earthquake or two..."

I've come to the realization that I do better when I just stick to what I know. And after the events of this morning...

It's girl time.
