More lunacy from Junkfood Science here.

Is it me, or is this insanity?

Although, if kids aren't allowed to bring anything but stuffed celery to school (NO PEANUT BUTTER!!! IT'S POISON!!!!), it's gonna be a whole lot harder to be the kid that everyone wants to be friends with because he always brings the Twinkies ( Read more... )

Heh, Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches should be banned because they're gross, not because peanuts are poison :p

I love peanut butter and jelly sandwiches!

And considering that peanut butter has been used as a food to feed starving/malnourished children, due to it's high protein content, I think that the fact that it has been banned in a lot of schools is a little screwed up, especially considering the fact that I have yet, in my whole 52 years, to meet anyone who is actually allergic to peanuts.

I have never liked peanut butter, and I don't like peanuts either. I'm weird it seems.

I have met someone allergic to nuts before, but not specifically peanuts. It's crazy, too, how often the news says people are violently allergic to peanuts. How have these people survived this long if they can go into anaphylactic shock just from being in the same room as someone eating peanut butter? Seriously?

I think it's hype, and everyone's buying into it because in a society as litigious as ours is, everyone thinks, "Better safe than sorry".

But it pisses me off that people are worried about kids bringing peanut butter to school or putting peanut butter cookies in a bake sale when there are probably three people in the United States who are allergic to peanut butter.

George Washington Carver is probably rolling in his grave.

Lol. When I was in school, I had never heard of nut allergies before. And peanuts/peanut oil is in practically everything.

I know that if I did like peanut butter and I was told I couldn't have it for lunch, it would have pissed me off. Instead of denying those people who like it, why not move the severely allergic to a peanut "safe zone" so they can be safe and the people who want to eat nuts, can? Oh, but then I have heard it claimed that simply just having EATEN a peanut at some point that day can set off someone's allergy. OMG someone needs a bubble if that's the case x_x

There was a woman who worked in the cafeteria where I work who had one of the worst shellfish allergies ever. And yet, she was around shellfish a lot. The only time I saw her taken, toes first, out to an ambulance because of her allergies was when she caught a full faceful of steam when she opened a vat of crab soup. Other than that, she worked around fish and shellfish all the time and it never bothered her, because she knew what she could and what she could not tolerate.

Precautions have to be taken, for sure, but precautions need to be taken by the person with the allergy, as well as the people around them.

But have you noticed that there seems to be a lot more food allergies than there used to be? I wonder where that comes from.

I have no idea. There seems to be more allergies and intolerances overall.

Myself, I can't eat raw banana, strawberry, kiwi, or peaches because when I do, my mouth and throat will burn and itch for a good half hour x_x It suuuuuuucks.
