So NOW it rains...

Dry weather makes me antsy. If we go for more than a week or two without any rain, I start to feel tense, like something is building and building and building, with no release in sight.

So for about a week now, there have been predictions of storms and wet and thunder showers--and nothing has happened. And every day I wake up and see the dry grass and the dry ground and the thirsy plants and I think, oh crapola.

So of course, with the arrival of the three day holiday weekend, it begins to rain, and all plans for yard work and outdoor concerts and fireworks and barbecues go out the window...kind of. Because it's not the kind of rain that constitutes a complete wash-out, mind--it's just sort of damp and drizzly and threatening. The kind of rain that could evaporate completely or go in the other direction and drown us all at the pinnacle of our desire for bombs bursting in air.

If I recall correctly, the skies opened all over the fourth of July celebrations last year, too. If I recall correctly, it POURED.

I actually could go out there now and give the front lawn a quick lick and a promise with the mower--it only takes about five minutes to do. And I've done enough fishing and yard work and outdoor stuff in the drizzle to not mind getting started on some little chores out there today. But it's not a day for big projects, I don't think.

I'm glad I got the back done last weekend.

If nothing else, we'll head off to the market and pick up some things for feasting that would translate just as well in the oven if it should come to that.

But I hope it doesn't.

We weren't planning to barbecue tonight, because we were hoping to make it to Downingtown for the concert tonight, but tomorrow I'd like to be able to do some chicken and potato salad and grilled corn...

And maybe a nice bottle of wine or three.

It's been a long month, and I think we're due for a little relaxation.

holiday, garden
