Try Again

It got too late before I started the pot pies last night, so I reluctantly decided to put it off for a day. I did accomplish quite a lot in the kitchen, though, which needed a lot of loving care due to the move-in craziness. It's looking pretty good now. I still have a countertop covered with random dishes and cookware that need to be rinsed and put away, but the rest of the kitchen is clean and (mostly) organized. I tell you, the counters are the most horrific color- this insanely bad yellowy light brown, sort of burnt orange color. It might have looked slightly better when it was new, but it is somewhat faded out now, and just bad. I am a person who often likes colors that other people hate, but this is just not one of those colors. And the countertops are pretty worn with marks from previous residents.

It is also taking me some time to get used to the stove here. Our last stove burned really hot, and it took several batches of rice to realize that I should put the burner on the very lowest low setting after boiling the rice to get a good pot. The other night when I made a batch of rice here, I put it on "medium-low", and after almost an hour the rice was more soaked than cooked. It took me twice as long to get it done, even though I eventually turned the heat up a lot. We did use the oven once, and fortunately we have an oven thermometer, which indicated that the oven temp is more-or less correct. So there is that, at least.

I went out for bagels and decaf this morning, and wow, it is a beautiful day outside. We've had a cold week (for us) with lots of rain (for us), so I took my raincoat and scarf, but didn't need them.  I was so excited about the bagels. We have vegan cream cheese and roma tomatoes. I love bagels with cream cheese and tomato. I've been having two breakfasts when possible for the past couple of weeks, with maybe an hour in between. I'm just so happy to be eating.
