Macneil and I have been on the waiting list for graduate student housing at UCSD for...oh...ever since about 2003. The story was that the waiting list was about 3 years, but the last time he called to check in, somehow we were still so far down in the list that he would be done with school by the time we got an offer. But there's a little loophole. With doctor's proof of the "little A" (we are likely to name this kid with a name beginning with A) we got an offer within just a couple of weeks. Today we got the call.

This means we will save about $400 a month on rent, and we cut our commute down from 40 - 45 minutes to about 5 minutes. We could take the UCSD shuttle to campus if we want to. We will live in a block with fewer units than our current condo (although the housing area is quite huge, they only clump 4 - 6 units together in any given "plex").

There are a couple of things that are less than perfect. We aren't allowed to look inside the apartment before agreeing to take it (we can see the floor plan and do a "driveby", and we got to specify that we wanted second floor instead of ground). We will have to use the coin op laundry on the premises whereas we now have a washer and dryer inside our unit. And we'll be hand washing all of our dishes instead of using the dishwasher that we've had here for the past 3+ years.

But the grounds are really nice with lots of trees and grass. There are community gardens, and playgrounds. Our unit will have built-in bookshelves and vaulted ceilings (if the literature is accurate). And we know people who live there who report enjoying living there.

Assuming we accept this offer, we'll be moving in early January. I'm excited!
