Scalloped Pouch (red - Egyptian)

Last year, my stepmom went to Egypt and I requested that she bring back some fabric for me. I imagined she'd be strolling through bazaars with lots of fabrics piled up all around, but she actually ended up having a pretty hard time finding fabric. She came across a large tablecloth with a hieroglyphic print, and brought that back for me to use in my sewing. I figured I'd make her something out of it since I'd been meaning to sew something for her for a long time but just hadn't found the time. This was the result.

The outer fabric is red organic herringbone cotton. For the inner lining, I selected a piece of the Egyptian tablecloth that featured the first letter of my stepmom's name (K).

I added a little bit of floral stitching along the inside flap- it helps the flap stay nice and flat. I also pieced a couple of strips from another part of the tablecloth on top of the flap piece to obscure another alphabet letter that would have distracted from the K (the yellow, green, and beige strips along the right of the button hole and perpendicular to that).

I constructed the piping from scratch out of black herringbone hemp fabric.

There is a little zipper pocket on the inside.
