Thanks to XKCD, I now know that OSX has a 'say' commandline command that hooks into the speech synth.
My work laptop is now reciting '99 bottles of beer on the wall'. It does a remarkably good job of it, getting the phrasing and timing pretty much spot on, other than the "take one down", where it's sticking a weird pause between the 'one' and 'down'.
In related news, work is still coming up to speed for the new year.
