Yay! REM came to Brazil! And I went to the concert! Yay!
REM is my favorite band, so the minute I heard they were coming here I knew I'd be there, even if I didn't have anyone to go with me. As it turned out, I almost had to go by myself, because my cousin blew me off, but my mom decided to go with me, and we dragged my dad along too. My mom is a fan too. ;) The last time REM were here was in Rock in Rio, and of course I was there (my mom and dad too, actually). It was brilliant. And everyone I knew who went that day said their show was the best. :)
We got there here early and had to wait forever, and suffer through a horribly loud opening band, but it was well worth it. It wasn't too crowded, because the tickets were very expensive, and the location wasn't the best (too far away from pretty much everywhere).
Still, it was great. They played songs from the new record and some really old ones too. Michael Stipe was adorable, as usual, and danced like a maniac. ;)
The songs, in no particular order:
Living Well Is the Best Revenge (Accelerate)
Drive (Automatic For the People)
These Days (Lifes Rich Pageant)
What's the Frequency Kenneth (Monster)
The One I Love (Document)
Imitation of Life (Reveal)
Hollow Man (Accelerate)
The Great Beyond
Exhuming McCarthy (Document)
Ignoreland (Automatic For the People)
Driver 8 (Fables of the Reconstruction)
Man-sized Wreath (Accelerate)
She Just Wants to Be (Reveal)
Let Me In (Monster)
Everybody Hurts (Automatic For the People)
It's the End of the World As We Know It (Document)
Bad Day
Orange Crush (Green)
Horse to Water (Accelerate)
Sweetness Follows (Automatic For the People)
Nightswimming (Automatic For the People)
Losing My Religion (Out of Time)
Supernatural Superserious (Accelerate)
Man on the Moon (Automatic For the People)
and a song I didn't recognize (and I thought I knew all their songs...)
25 songs in total. Wow. :) Though I didn't understand some of their choices. I mean, Exhuming McCarthy? Seriously? WTF? And I don't really like Ignoreland. Blah. But they played Let Me In, which I love, and it was beautiful. Nightswimming was also absolutely gorgeous, with only Mike on keyboard and Michael singing. It's a lovely song, and the two of they were great. Of course the crowd went wild with Losing My Religion and The One I Love. I screamed and jumped and sang like crazy. :)
And I noticed that none of them have changed at all in, like, 10 years of something. Mike Mills and Peter Buck still have the same haircut, Mike has the same glasses (he must be the only rock star who wear glasses in concerts), Michael is still bald and still has a crazy dress sense. I mean, who in their right mind would perform in Rio in a suit jacket and tie?
Anyway, of course he mentioned Obama winning the election (I knew he would), and he was very sweet. Mike too. Peter was rather serious, as usual. He rarely seems to smile. He's very different from Mike and Michael in that respect, because they are always laughing and dancing and moving around. Guess it's just his personality.
So, I had a wonderful time. Too bad I didn't take any pictures. Cameras weren't supposed to be allowed, but I saw a lot of people with them. If I'd known... Ah, well. It was fantastic!
