Tuesday's:
Robert Schumann (1810-1856) - It's hard to imagine romantic music without hearing Robert Schumann's piano pieces. Rebellious against the strict classical forms of musical creation, his music was an expression of an individual's emotional life. Schumann suffered from what is now known as bipolar disorder, and his musical pieces express both extreme melancholy and exhilarating exuberance. Romantic love defined his personal life as well: He married Clara Wieck against her father's wishes, after a bitter court battle over permission to marry before her twenty-first birthday. They won, and were married the day before Clara turned twenty-one. Many of Schumann's creations express his love for his wife, such as his famous Fantasy in C and the song cycles Dichterliebe (Poet's Love), with lyrics by Heinrich Heine, and Frauenliebe und Leben (Women's Love and Life), with lyrics by Chamisso. Clara was a virtuoso pianist, and at the time as well-known as her composer husband.
