Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) - Ludwig van Beethoven was one of the greatest musicians of all time, responsible for nine incredible symphonies, among them the famous Fifth Symphony, with its distinct short-short-short-long opening notes, evoking the Morse code for the letter V for Victory, and the equally famous Ninth Symphony with its exuberant Freude, schöner Götterfunken (Ode to Joy). Everyone knows his furrowed brow and wild hair, and that he was deaf toward the end of his musical career. But nobody knows for sure who is the unsterbliche Geliebte ("immortal beloved") he addressed in three love letters found after his death. Many prominent women of the time have been cast in this role by various historians, music lovers, and even a movie (Immortal Beloved, 1996, which starred Gary Oldman as Beethoven). When he died on March 26, 1827, Beethoven took the secret of the woman's identity to his grave.
